HALLOWEEN

Compere 1.

He, dear schoolmates, teachers and parents! Let’s begin our English party. Today we are going to tell you about Halloween traditions and to show you some episodes of its celebrations.

Compere 2.

To begin with, we would like to say some words about the origin of Halloween. The story of this funny holiday dates back to ancient times. Two or three thousand years ago in Great Britain and Ireland there were people called Celts. For the Celts, New Year began on November 1. In time, November 1 became a Christian festival known as All Saints Day or All Hallows. The night before was called Eve of All Hallows and it became to be called Halloween. When English and Irish settlers immigrated to the USA, Halloween traditions came with them. So on the 31st of October, dozens of children dressed in costumes of pirates, ghosts, popular heroes of the day, knock on their neighbors’ doors and say, “Trick or Treat” when the door opens.

Compere 1.

Of course, most people don’t believe in ghosts and witches but it is fun to dress up as one for a costume party and to have a good time. Therefore, we want you to have some fun too, and we are beginning our party with a poem, which is called “It’s Halloween”.

Student 1.

Strange things happen on Halloween night.
A witch sails by on a broom.
Pumpkins grin slyly from rickety fences,
As owls fly away to the moon.

Student 2. How thin and sharp is the moon tonight!
How thin and sharp and ghostly white
Is the slim curved crook of the moon tonight!
Langston Hughes

Student 3.

Let’s fly like a bat
On Halloween night
And give all our neighbors
A terrible fright!

Student 4.

Or creep through the dark
Like a big, black cat
And make all our neighbors
Cry, “What was that?”

Student 5.

Or float like a ghost
In the dark midnight air,
And make everyone run
And hide to beware.

Student 6.

Then maybe tomorrow,
When the witching hour’s done,
We’ll give in and tell them,
“It was Halloween fun!”

All together.

“It was Halloween fun!”

Compere 2.

So, as you see, our party has started. Everyone is trying his or her best in making Halloween decorations and creepy costumes. So, one of our quests is coming up to us. Here she is with her “Good Disguise”.

(The girl dressed like a witch, recites a poem looking at herself in the mirror.)

Girl.

“I’m going to dress myself so queer
For Halloween”, I said, “This year,
Nobody else will ever guess
That I am little Mary Bess”.
I put my old clothes all in place,
I fastened on my funny face,
Looked in the glass above the shelf,
And didn’t even know myself!

Compere 2.

Suppose, you understood who would be riding on a broomstick, didn’t you? Certainly, it is a pretty and charming witch! Girls dressed as witches in black are extremely popular on this day too. Therefore, we invite here a person who really has seen a strangest sight.

(One student started reciting the poem “Fat Old Witch”.)

Student 10.

The strangest sight I’ve ever seen

Was a fat old witch in a flying machine.

The witch flew high, the witch flew low,

The witch flew fast, the witch flew slow,

The witch flew up, the witch flew down.

She circled all around the town.

Then turning left, and turning right,

She disappeared into the night.

That fat old witch in a flying machine

Is the strangest sight I’ve ever seen.

Of course it happened on Halloween.

Song “Halloween” by Andrew Gold

Main witch.

And where are my witches!

Witches flying through the air.
Witches, witches everywhere.
Witches here, witches there.
Witches, witches everywhere.

Witches hiding in the dark.
Witches dancing in the park.
Witches here, witches there.
Witches, witches everywhere.

Witches flying through the air.
Witches, witches everywhere.
Big black hats on their bright green hair.
Witches, witches everywhere.

Witches here, witches there.
Riding on a broom-stick, flying through the air.
Witches here, witches there.
Witches, witches everywhere.

I’M AN OLD WITCH

1st Witch.

I’m a strange old witch

In a pointed hat.
Hello, Halloween!
Who rides on a broom
With her big black cat?
Hello, Halloween!
Across the sky,
Across the sky,
When the moon is fat,
On the dark, dark night.
Of Hallow-Halloween!
I like witches.

2nd Witch.

I like witches,
Spooky witches,
Happy witches,
Messy witches,
Fat witches,
Any kind of witches
I like witches.

3rd Witch.

A witch on her broom,
A witch in her house,
A witch in her room,
A witch on the moon,
I like witches.

4th Witch.

Thin witches,
Mean witches,
Green witches,
Nice witches,
Scary witches,
Old witches,
I like witches.

Main witch.

Let’s have a party. Invite one friends.

All together.

Dear friends come in.

(All kinds of different strange creatures such as ghosts, dwarfs come into the hall with the words):

Ghosts and witches
Can be seen
Trick-or-treat
Trick-or-treat
Give us something
Good to eat!
The sky is blue
The sky is green
Have you got a penny?
For Halloween!
For Halloween!
For Halloween!

Madge.

Oh, I see a black cat among our guests. Let us invite him to our party.

Black Cat.

I am a black cat with an arched back. Once I was a human being, but I was punished for my evil deeds. Thus I have become a black cat. But today I came here with my friends – little black kittens. Here they are!

Kittens are furry,
Kittens are puny,
They lap at milk in a shallow dish,
They lick their whiskers and dream of fish.
Main Witch.

Do you know that black cats were the partners of witches? Many people were afraid of cats. Some thought cats were the spirits of the dead. Others believed that witches changed themselves into cats. If people met a cat they asked: “Is this really a cat? Or is this a witch changed into a cat?”

Ghost 1.

A flash of white in the darkness,
Who-oo-ooo?
Hoots the owl on the post.

Ghost 2.

A creak and a groan,
A squeak and a moan,
Ooo-oo-ooo!

Ghost 3.

Comes the howl-
It’s a ghost!

Ghost 1.

I am a tiny ghost,
A ghost, a ghost!
I like to frighten people,
The most, the most.

Ghost 2.

I used to fly at night,
At night, at night
Because I’m so light,
And white, and white!

Ghost 3.

Who am I?
A face so round
And eyes so bright,
A nose that glows,
My, what a sight!
A scary mouth
With a jolly grin.
No arms, no legs,
Just head to chin.

Pumpkin.

I was a pumpkin big and round
When I grew upon the ground
Now I have a mouth and a nose
And two big eyes that never close.
Light my candle on Halloween
So that my jolly face is seen
By ever ghost and witch and cat
And trick-or-treating acrobat
I will smile and shine for you
If you come trick-or-treating too.

Jack-o’-lantern.

I’m Lack-o’-lantern
Fat and fine
They picked me off a pumpkin vine
Halloween is coming, don’t you know?
Just light my candle and watch me glow.

Spider.

Oh, it is October 31. It’s our day today!

I am a spider,
A spider am I.
Don’t ever touch me
Because you will cry.
I am a spider,
My colour is black,
And that’s a web
Behind my back
I am a spider,
My web is light,
It can easily
Catch a fly.
I am a spider,
Step out of my way,
I never say “Die!”
But say “OK!”

Vampire.

Did you recognize me? Yes, I am a vampire… Do you know that vampires are supposed to be dead men who have come back to life? At night, after sunset, we leave our graves to look for human blood. We return to our graves before dawn.

HALLOWEEN RAP

Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
Sing ha-ha Halloween
It’s October thirty-one
The time of year to have some fun!
Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
Sing ha-ha Halloween
I’m a vampire, you’re a ghost
It’s time of the year I love the most
Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
Sing ha-ha Halloween
Wear a witch’s hat, wear a white sheet
Knock at the door, play trick-or-treat
Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
Sing ha-ha Halloween
Cut the pumpkin, put in a light
No evil spirits can come tonight
Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
We’ve got chocolate, sweets and cake,
November one I’ve got toothache!
Ha-ha-ha-ha Halloween
Sing ha-ha Halloween

Skeletons.

We are skeletons. We came here to frighten you. Many people cannot stand our strange jokes. Are you afraid of us?

We are skeletons,
Skeletons we are.
Aren’t you afraid of us?
Ah-ha-ha!

Main Witch.

Now let us have some fun.
We shall play a very loved game.
One from our guests
And one from the children!

Game “Guessing the number of the seeds in the plate”

Teacher.

And do you know what was inside the pumpkin before it became a lantern? Yes, there were seeds. Look, in this plate there are seeds from one pumpkin. Can you guess how many seeds there are? Please, three pupils come here and tell the number which you think is number of the seeds on the plate. The pupil whose number is the nearest to the real number is the winner.

Vampire.

I want you to play another game.

Game “Skirt race”

Teacher.

Another very popular game at Halloween is “Skirt race”. Please, 5 pupils come to me and make two teams of 8 pupils and of strange creatures. Each team gets a skirt. You’ll have in turn to put a skirt on, pull it down, step out of it and pass it to the next as quickly as you can. Let’s see who is the quickest.

(The pupils in turn put on and pass on the skirts in teams. The winning team gets the prize.)

Ghost.

I want to play too.

Game “Feather race”

Teacher.

We’ll now see how ghosts play. You know that ghosts are as light, as … (the teacher shows a feather and the pupils try to name it) a feather so with ghosts we’ll now have feather race. Please ghosts, come to me. Take a feather for a group of three and your task to hold a feather in the air as long as you can.

(At the teacher’s signal the participants start blowing at the feather so that it couldn’t fall down. The group that holds the feather the longest is the winner.)

Skeleton.

There are many games with pumpkins at Halloween. This is one called “Pinning the pumpkin”. I need 2 members, one from children. Look at these 2 jack-o’-lanterns. They have no eyes and mouths. Your task is to write eyes and mouth in the right places with.

Whose pumpkin do you like more if you like …‘s pumpkin – clap your hands now clap your hands if you like …’s pumpkin morе. O.K. Take your treats both.
