Old England
Old England is a period in the history of Great Britain that covers some of the key events and features of the country's development in the Middle Ages. 123
In the early Middle Ages, the islands were inhabited by several Celtic peoples: Britons, Scots, Picts, Gaels, Welsh. To protect themselves from the Scots and Picts, the Britons called up the Germanic tribes of Angles and Saxons from the continent, who originated from Saxony. A little later, the Jutes invaded from the Jutland peninsula. Gradually, the Germans pushed the Britons to the west, and they were forced to leave Britain altogether.
In the 6th-7th centuries, the Angles and Saxons formed several kingdoms: Wessex, Sussex, Essex, Northambria, East Anglia, Mercia, Kent. In 829, King Eckbert united all the kingdoms under one crown, and Britain became known as England.
