Detective Alibi

This game is made for children of all ages. The inductive method in combination with the use of the Internet is used in this game (authentic materials enhance real value of the game and allow children to feel like real participants of the events, which increases the interest to a subject). It can be used as a final lesson on the simple past tense. We hold this game within a week of foreign languages in our school. Students of the 6th or 7th forms usually take part in this game. The team of 4 people participates in the game. There can be 3 or 4 teams. The number of players per team may be changed at the request of the teacher.

Assessing of the game:

Final grade for participation in the game can be set in two ways:

  1. A leader is selected (appointed) in each team, at the end of the game he puts all marks to his team members. The teacher can change marks depending of the accuracy of the work and the speed of doing the task.

  1. Teacher puts the marks to the whole team. Assessment takes into account the grammar, the correct spelling of words and forms of the verb, the correct pronunciation.

If the structure of participants is more powerful, they are requested to do additional task. They must solve the problem on the Sherlock Holmes’s site.

They can do these tasks at home before the game and show the variants of the decisions in class.

We are also use the blog of Dr. Watson.

Each teacher can use different assignments to work with the blog.

We have several variants of the task:

  1. Choose the headlines to the articles of the blog Dr. Watson

  2. Insert the missing words in the text

  3. Arrange the text in the correct order

  4. Choose the correct translation to the titles of articles

Usually we give these tasks in case when two or more teams are equal.

Equipment:

  1. Interactive whiteboard or TV- set with DVD player or computer or notebook

  2. Moriarty’s letter

  3. Sherlock’s letter

  4. Photos of Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson:

Jim Moriarty:

You can print the photos or just show on the screen of the computer or whiteboard.

  1. The map of Great Britain (you can use computer variant of the map)

  2. The worksheet with missing words

  3. Envelopes with checks, bills and tickets.

  4. Any other things to create the atmosphere of London and detective agency.

Preparation:

  1. Print the required number of letters from Moriarty and Sherlock Holmes.

  2. Print, cut and put in envelopes checks, tickets and bills. (we usually use specially made envelopes with printed address)

  3. Print or display at the interactive whiteboard photos of Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson and Jim Moriarty. (We use the characters from the detective drama Sherlock BBC1 channel)

  4. Prepare a fragment from the movie "The Blind Banker" (Season 1, Episode 2, time 00:29:21 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EST5O0UhebU).

  5. In this fragment Sherlock Holmes finds the hero looking through the checks, tickets, and notes in the notebook. This fragment shows how Sherlock Holmes is working with the evidence. It will help students to understand how to act during the game, as well as creating the right atmosphere. (you can show it using your computer, interactive whiteboard or TV-set with DVD player)

The game

  1. Tell the children that you have received a letter from the famous detective Sherlock Holmes.

  2. Read your email, and give each team a copy of the letter. Then show Moriarty’s letter and give each child their copies without reading the letter. Tell them that in his letter Moriarty wrote his variant of the events.

  3. Mark on the map the places that are pointed out in Moriarty’s letter. Pay attention to the dates and the sequence of actions. You can change the dates, depending on when you conduct the game.

  4. Tell what evidences Moriarty gave to prove his alibi and explain how they need to work with these evidences. Don’t forget to tell your student that they have to use all the words and information from the bills, checks and tickets.

  5. Show the fragment from the film and pay attention to how Sherlock Holmes analyses the evidences. (you can show this fragment in English with subtitles or in Russian if your students have difficulties with understanding)

  6. Give the students an evidence envelope and card with missing words (in the weaker groups the words can be translated).

  7. Children have 30 minutes to solve the problem and give the answer whether Moriarty is guilty or not. Usually this time is enough to cope with the job (this time may be reduced or increased depending on the level of students).

  8. Children should analyze all the evidences and write the decision in their worksheet.

  9. THE GAME IS ON!

The answer:

Moriarty is not guilty.

But my students think that he is a consulting criminal and can ask somebody to make this robbery while he was in Scotland.
