Chairman - Ladies and Gentlemen! Let me begin the sitting of our literary club. Today we'll deal with two masters of detective genre- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Mr. Edgar Allan Рое. Who is the first to speak out?

1st - Let me, please. I believe that Edgar Рое is the most wonderful writer of this genre.

All his works: stories and poems as well are full of mystic events, they are exciting, and nobody can put them down till the end.

2nd - I fully agree. Edgar Рое believed in unnatural things of this or another kind and

always wrote about them in his literary works.

3rd - Yes. He wrote about people buried still alive.-And as during the history of mankind

people have taken interest in the other world his works, full of mysticism and horror produce a great impression on readers.

4th - Gentlemen, do you know about the tradition connected with Рое and his works?

1st- What tradition?

4th - In Baltimore an unusual party takes place every Halloween. In the dark of night,

visitors go to the church ground, where Рое is buried.. .Everything is quiet. Then a voice calls out. It is Рое!.. No, it is just an actor, reading Poe's work.

5th - Gentlemen , but many consider Poe's works are not easy to read. His language is

difficult to understand today.

2nd - Despite this some of his stories won prizes, though he became famous only in
" 1845 when his poem "The Raven" was published.

Звучит музыка.” The Phantom of the opera” Потом стих Эдгара По "Raven "( читает учащийся наизусть)

Once upon a midnight dreary, While I pondered, weak and weary Over many quaint and curios volume of forgotten love-While I nodded nearly napping, Suddenly there came a tapping, As of someone gently rapping, at my chamber door. But the Raven, sitting lonely on the placid bust, spoke only That one word, as if his soul in that one word he did out pour. Nothing father than he uttered - a feather then he fluttered Till I scarily move than muttered "Other friends have flown before On the morrow he will leave me, As my hopes have flown before" Then the bird said "NEVERNORE"

Chairman - Alas! Gentlemen. Poe's life was difficult. He was troubled by sickness of the body and mind. He died in 1849 , in poverty, after days of heavy drinking. This is a grievous fact of Poe's biography.

And now let's speak about another master of detective story, the notable English writer, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

1st-

Why English? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Scotland.

And his parents were the Irish

Gentlemen! Gentlemen! Be quite! Our notable British.

What do we know about him? He was a doctor. In 1882 he moved from Scotland to England о set up a practice.

What do you think, Gentlemen, if Conan Doyle didn't start writing could he become so famous?

Goodness knows! At least, we wouldn't learn about Mr. Sherlock Holmes. The most famous detective of all time.

And haven't this phrase "Elementary, my dear Watson" known well by everybody, (сдержанно смеются)

chairman - Well. Let's watch a pattern from one of his wonderful stories "The speckled band"

(идёт пьеса отрывок из «Пестрой ленты» Конана Дойля)

The speckled band (Пестрая лента)

Sh. Holmes:" I am sorry wake you up Watson, but as a matter of fact that Mrs. Hudson

had been woken up. She woke me and me you."

Watson: - And what's up? A Fire?

Holmes: -No, a client. A girl, very anxious, wants to see me by all means.

And if a young lady travels in such early hour and visits unknown people, I think the

reason is very serious. I thought it would be interesting for you to listen to her story.

Watson: - It's a real pleasure to me. (Входят в гостиную)

Holmes: - Good morning, madam. My name is Sherlock Holmes and this is my friend

and helper doctor Watson. I see you shiver. Draw up to the fire , please, and have a cup

of hot coffee.

Helen: - Not cold makes me shiver Mr. Holmes.

Holmes: -What's then?

Helen:- Fear, Mr. Holmes! Horror!

Holmes:-You mustn't fear. I am sure we can help you. You've come by morning train

(слегка вопросительно)

Helen:- Do you know me?

Holmes:- No, but I see the return ticket in your palm. You started early and then had a

drive in a dogcart along heavy roads, (девушка вздрогнула)

Holmes:- There is no mystery, my dear madam. The left arm of your jacket is spoiled

with a fresh mud and these marks one can get only in a dog cart.

Helen:- You are perfectly right. I started from home before 6, reached the station and

but the early morning train I arrived in London. Sir, I can stand this no longer. Oh, sir!

Help me, please, or at least throw a little light on this case! I can't pay you now, but in

two months I'll have money and you will see I can be thankful.

Holmes:-1 am all attention, Miss.

Helen:- My name is Helen Stoner. I am living in the house of my stepfather doctor Roy

Lott. When my mother married Doctor Roy Lott I and my sister Julia were only two

years old. Our mother was rather rich. 8 years ago our mother was killed in a railway

accident and we went to live in Stoke Moran. My step father is violent and quarrels with

all people. No servants wanted to stay in our house and me and Julia had to do all the

work about the house. My sister was only 30 when she had gone, but her hair was

grey.

Holmes:- So, your sister is dead?

Helen:- Yes, she had gone 2 years ago and I want to speak to you about her death. 2

years ago my sister spent Christmas at her aunt in Harrow. There she met a man who

became her fiancé(жених). Roy Lott didn't mind, but 2 weeks before her wedding my

sister, my the only friend had gone.

Holmes:-! ask you to tell us all the details.

Helen:- It's easy for me, because i can't forget hat night. Our bedrooms are on the

ground floor. The first one is doctor Roy Lott's, the next is my sister's and then my

bedroom. Is it clear?

Holmes:- Oh, yes. Certainly.

Helen:- How happy you are, Julia. Soon you'll leave this house, and me

Julia:- Don't feel, darling! I'll do my best I think you'll be able to live with me. Oh, it's 11

o'clock. I'll go. I say, Helen! Have you heard anyone whistle in the dead of the night?

Helen:- Never

Julia:- And are you sure that you couldn't whistle in your sleep?

Helen:- Certainly not. But why?

Julia:- During last nights I have heard a low, clear whistle and can't understand where it

came from. And I wanted to ask you about it. Have you heard?

Helen:- No, I haven't.

Julia:-Well. It doesn't matter. Good-bye.

( Елен сидит с книгой. Вдруг раздается леденящий крик. Появляется Джулия)

Julia:- My God! Helen! The specked band (шатается и падает)

Helen:- Good Heavens! Julia! Julia!

Holmes:- Was your sister dressed?

Helen:- No, she was in her night dress.

Holmes:- And what do you think of her words" The specked band" ?

Helen:- No idea

Holmes:- It's all very strange. Well, go on , please.

Helen: - A month ago a man asked me to marry him. I told my step-father about it and

he didn't mind. 2 days ago the repairs started in our house and I had to sleep in my

sister's room. Can you imagine my horror when at night, lying in bed I heard just the

same whistle my sister's heard?

I got up, dressed and early in the morning went to the railway station and then to

London to see you.

Holmes:-You have done wisely, Miss Stoner. We must come and see everything on the

spot. Can we?

Helen:-Yes, certainly. The step-father wanted to go to the city.

Holmes:- Watson, don't you mind to the trip?

Watson:-Surely.

Holmes:- Wonderful! Expect us in the afternoon, madam. Would you like to have

breakfast?

Helen:- No, thank you. I have a cause in the city. Good- bye gentlemen.

Holmes:- Good-bye, madam. See you later.

Holmes:- what do you think of it Watson?

Watson:- No idea, but to my mind it's very deep and dirty case.

Holmes:- Yes, rather deep and rather dirty. And I want to examine all details on the

spot. ( слышится шум) Well what's that?

Roy Lott:- Which of you is Sherlock Holmes?

Holmes:- It's me, sir. And who are you?

Roy Lott:-I am doctor Grimsby Roy Lott from Stoke Moran.

Holmes:- Sit down, please.

Roy Lott:-I don't want to sit down! My step daughter has been here. I traced her! What

did she tell you?

Holmes:- But I have heard the crocuses will blossom fine.

Roy Lott:- Ah! You want to get me off! You are a villain(негодяй) Holmes the busybody!

A push full (проныра) person! A sleuth!

Holmes:- You are a very pleasant company. Close the door behind you leaving the room

for it's decided draught.

Roy Lott:- I'll go out when I tell you everything Mind your own business!

Holmes:- What a pleasant gentleman! Well, Watson. Let's have breakfast and then I'll

go on case to the city.

Chairman : Gentlemen! Our next sitting of our Literary club I guess we should start speaking about the English writer of detective stories, plays, who is considered to be England’s First Lady of Mystery and The Queen of The Detective Fiction the world over. About Agatha Christy of course!
