Do you know what “The Red Cross and the Red Crescent”¹ is? It is the international organization that has more than 100 million members in 170 countries. It gives practical help to everybody who needs it, especially wounded² soldiers, during and after wars, epidemics. It also organizes special programmes for young people interested in volunteer work. It all began in 1859 during a battle between the French and the Austrian armies around the village of Solferino in Northern Italy. More than 30,000 soldiers were killed and 10,000 were wounded. Nobody was there to give help. A 30-year-old Swiss businessman, Henry Dunant, who was travelling across Italy at that time, organized the people from other villages into taking care of the wounded. Then doctors from other cities and countries came and organized hospitals. It was Dunant’s idea, described in his book “A Memory of Solferino”, to create³ a neutral volunteer organization and to organize an international conference to put his plan into action. Dunant gave all his money for this organization and became poor. But in 1901 Dunant was given the first Nobel Peace Prize for his services to humanity ⁴.
