Ход урока

I. Приветствие. Знакомство. Hello, boys and girls! I’m very glad to see you in such a lovely day. My name is Inna Petrovna, I’m an English teacher from Sergiev Posad. I like working at school most of all. I like my profession, it makes me happy.

And now I want you tell me a few words about yourselves, one after another.

Thanks a lot! As all people we are different, but we have a lot in common. Do you love your native town? Do you like our country? Do you like the planet we live on? Why do you like it? (kids’ answers)

II. Активизация лексики.

  1. Let’s listen to the famous song What a Wonderful World sung by Louis Armstrong. You can see the words of the song in front of you, but some of them are missing. Try to fill in the gaps. You will hear the song twice. Let’s check the answers. ( текст песни появляется на экране)

  2. You can see a lot of words here. Classify them according to the types of environment.

Natural features

Living things

Man-made things

Climate, weather, mountains, forests, lakes, seas, oceans, continents, minerals, air, water, islands, land, planets, the Moon.

Fishes, human beings, animals, insect species, plant species, trees.

Towns, houses, canals, railways, farms, factories, picture galleries.

3. People can create a lot of wonderful and very useful things… But sometimes they don’t think about natural surroundings. Look at the pictures and make up a story about what happened. Use these expressions. You may begin with the sentence: Four men came to the forest by car.

To come to the forest, to cut down trees, to start a fire, to kill the fish, to pollute the water, to leave litter, to wash the car, campfire, dynamite. At the end of your story write green rules for campers (Don’t pollute water! etc)

4. Do you remember how to make nouns from such verbs as pollute, protect, inform, organise, situate? You’re right, you should only add suffixes –ion/tion. Please, do it. Let’s check up.

5. Fill in the gaps with these words. Sometimes you need a noun and sometimes you need a verb. What does Greenpeace do?

GREENPEACE

Our ___________________ wants to ______________________ the environment.

We fight against water and air ______________________.

Are you unhappy with the ecological _____________________in your region?

Send some _______________________about it and we’ll try to help.

6. Read and translate the text.

Once there was a wise old man. He could answer any question in the world. Everybody knew about him. One day two boys said, “We’re going to fool that old man. We’ll catch a bird, go to the old man and say, “We are holding something in our hands. Is it alive or is it dead?” If he says, ’Dead’, we’ll let the bird fly, and if he says, ‘Alive’, we’ll kill it.”

They caught a bird and they carried it to the old man and they said, “We are holding something in our hand. Is it alive or is it dead?” And the wise old man looked at the young people and smiled. “It’s in your hands,” he said.

What is the main idea of this story?

III. Project work. It’s time to watch a short video, listen to the song and find out its main idea (Don’t kill the world). You’ve got green leaves on your desks. Each of you has to write down on his two leaves how people and YOU can help the Earth. Use the ideas we’ve discussed today. Then each group has to make a poster with these leaves and the picture of our planet. You have got 5 minutes.

Then each group presents the poster.

IV. Conclusion. Thanks a lot for your work. Do you remember the topic of our lesson? You’re right. I want to read the poem written by a British girl, Miriam Mackley.

The world needs a friend

To love and depend on

In times of trouble…

The world has hope yet

If the children let it

And if we do it right

Together we can make the world

A better place

Because the world’s best friend

Is you!

Do you agree with Miriam? I was very glad to meet you today and to work with you. And what about you? Was the lesson interesting for you? Was there anything new? Thanks a lot for your work! All of you have got “a five” today.
