The Gunib Fortress

The Gunib fortress is a historical monument of Dagestan. It witnessed the Caucasion war and was the last stronghold of Imam Shamil. The fortress is located on the Gunib plateu. The wall is about 3km long, 5-7 high and about 1m wide

Who built the fortress and when?

The fortress is located the village of Gunib The fortress itself was built by Russian soldiers for use as a fortification.

• It was built during the Caucasion war. It is believed that this long-term battle ended here when Imam Shamil voluntarily went into captivity for which the Russian promised not to kill him and his family.

The unique nature of this place requires special care. Therefore, Botanical garden located on the Gunib patue was created here is a picturesque corner of the Northern Caucasus

The Gunib fortress is an example of Russian fortification art.

• The Gunib fortress is under state protection as a monument of regional significance and is a Federal ownership

Historical monument

• Unfortunately, natural and anthropogenic factors affect the condition of this culture heritage site: the wall continues to collapse in several place. As of 2018, some sections of the fortress walls have been lost.
