Karelia is situated in the northwestern part of the country – a region of lakes, rivers, and forests famed for its natural beauty.

Petrozavodsk is the capital of Karelia. It was founded at the very beginning of the 18 th century. The verdant city is spread out along the banks of Lake Onego. It is the administrative, economic, cultural, scientific centre of the republic.
