Aims and objectives:


  • to sum up the pupils’ knowledge about one of the greatest masterpieces of painting – The Mona Lisa by Leo da Vinci , to give additional information about it, to develop and enrich pupils’ outlooks;

  • developing spontaneous talking skills based on the students’ personal experience and views;

  • teaching students to express their own ideas in English; developing students’ learning skills via group and class work, developing positive ways of thinking;

  • educating students with respect to the world’s culture and eternal values;


Students Will Be Able To (SWBAT) :

  • train the new words and expressions orally according to the topic of the lesson;

  • SWBAT develop their speaking, reading skills, skills and habits of prepared and unprepared speech.

T: Good morning, students. How are you getting on?

Today’s lesson we are going to discuss some aspects of our lexical topic “Visual Arts. Painting”.

T: Let’s check up your home assignment.

(Textbook: ex. 40 p.36 “ Speaking section”)

Ask and answer the questions to each other.



T: On this lesson let’s remember genres of painting you know.

Task: Define genres of these paintings.

(Textbook p. 5,7,8, 15 + illustrations of the almanac “The Treasures of the World”).


T: Do you know what the most famous portrait is?

T: Look at this great masterpiece! (showing “Mona Lisa” by Leo da Vinci). What do you know about it?

T: It’s time to know more about creating of this picture.

Listen to one of well – known critics characterized this famous picture. (reading the pattern)

Do you agree with his opinion? What do you think about this mysterious portrait? Work and discuss it in groups.


T: Why is the Mona Lisa so famous? We’ll know after reading information, using your handouts.

Task for Reading. During the reading of this text draw attention on these two points:

What makes Mona Lisa so mysterious and why this portrait is the most famous one in the world”.

T: You have 5 min. to discuss them after reading the text.


T: Textbook ex.56 p.46. You can see the poem by Brenda M. Weber “Mona Lisa”. Recite it now and translate it at home.

Try to translate it in poetic form.
