Oxford

• Oxford is the oldest university in England. Tuition began in 1906 here. The campus is located 62 miles northwest of London and represents a jazzy town with the population of about 150200 people (including students). There are 38 colleges on the territory of this university. Each of these colleges has its own libraries, which work round the clock in most cases.

• The system of education in Oxford is very different from ours. In the first year students must pass obligatory courses in each subject. Then they can choose any subjects they want to study. It’s based on tutoring: students are attached to individual consultants, which are the best experts in their fields. Such classes are usually conducted 1-2 times a week and are called «tutorials». Generally, 2-3 students take part in these tutorials. For Oxford’s students is not necessary to attend ordinary lectures, they almost don’t influence on common academic performance of a student.

• Cambridge is not only the name of the university, firstly, it is the ancient town, that got its name from the river Kem, on the bank of which is located. The population of this city is about 123900 people (including students).

But this question is fundamentally wrong, because the university, or rather 31 colleges are scattered all over the city. For instance, one of the oldest colleges – Peterhouse was built in 1284, but the last 31 college - Robinson College was based in 1977.

• The river Kem doesn’t always was called like that, in ancient times it had the name «Grant», so Cambridge was called «Granta».
• On the streets of Cambridge is forbidden to play tennis.
• The university had been carefully keeping the tradition to give to the worst students in Maths wooden spoons for 7 centuries (before 1909). From year to year, students were given a bigger spoon than in the previous year. Finally, the spoon became too big, therefore the tradition had to be shelved.

Eton

• Eton College (which is always called just Eton) – is private boarding school for boys in Eton, Berkshire, next to Windsor. Over 1300 students aged from 13 to 18 years old are taught here. The school was found in 1440 by Henry VI. 19 British prime ministers studied in Eton.

• In Eton boys get up at 7:30 a. m. and usually go to bed at 9:30 p. m. Every student has his own Tutor, with whom he meets once a week together with the group of 6 boys for discussing ordinary topics and individually, if a boy needs an advice. In the first 3 years of training a Tutor for students are appointed by a headmaster, but then students can do it themselves. Every student has his own bedroom which he can decorate for his liking and where he can invite his friends.

• Strange as it may seem, but at first, Eton, one of the most famous schools all over the world, wasn’t a school for rich folks, but a free school for beggarly but clever at the same time boys.
• School’s libraries are well equipped and there every student can be offered tea or coffee and hot chocolate.
• Every student must have a laptop or something, because it is an integral part of studying here. All the campus is equipped with high-quality Internet.
