Christened 14 May 1727 – 2 August 1788
- born in Sudbury, Suffolk;
- was a prominent British portrait and landscape painter;
- the son of John Gainsborough, a cloth merchant;
- he soon evinced a marked inclination for drawing;
- had no special education in painting in Italy;
- was called a self-taught artist;
