Checking Grammar

After we have finished teaching a part of course, we may want to find out how well learners have learnt it. For this purpose we use a progress test at the end of the term or we assess our learners throughout the term giving small pieces of work (classroom-based assessment). We use the information from the test to decide if we need to do more work on this area or not, and perhaps to give learners feedback on their strengths and difficulties in this area. Feedback to learners on what they got right or wrong, their strengths and weakness, and what they can do to improve, is very important. Through feedback, assessment helps learning.

RULES:

1. Divide into groups.

2. Give some grammar exercises with mistakes and correct answers.

3. Groups agree on answers.

4. Give each group 30 pounds.

5. Each group must bet on corrections.

6. If they are sure, they bet high – ALL IN. If they are unsure, they bet low – minimum 10 pounds.

7. If group is correct, they get the money. If not, they lose the money. Teacher decides quantity.

8. If group loses all their money, they have to “borrow” from the richest group. This team, lending money, decides on the price (a dance, a poem, say the alphabet backwards, press ups etc).

9. The final question (secret) – all teams ALL IN.

Example:

Word Formation

Complete the sentences with words derived from the words in brackets.’ – the task is done, but there are some mistakes. Correct mistakes and agree on answers.

A phone call

Among the e-mails waiting for me at work one morning was one from a member of my staff. It was sent from his personal e-mail address and there was only his home phone number. Thinking something was wrong, I immediately called 1) him (he).

A sleepy female voice answered and told me he was at work and 2) will come (come) home late in the evening.

The 3) worse (bad) moment was when I remembered that I had recently asked staff members to give me their home numbers. I went right down to the employee’s office to apologize for my call.

4) Lately (late), however, he thanked me. I had awakened his daughter, who had an exam that morning but 5) forgot (forget) to set her alarm. Thanks to my call, she hadn’t missed her exam.

Chicago from above

Following a recent innovation, the new Hancock Observatory invites you to enjoy Chicago’s best views from the city’s highest open-air Skywalk. It has quickly gained 6)population (popular) with both Chicagoans and visitors of the city.

Skywalk is Chicago’s 7)higher (high) open-air viewing area. It is 1,000 feet in the air! Everyone here can feel the strong wind and hear the dynamic buzz of the city below. The friendly staff will 8)certainly (certain) tell the real story behind Chicago’s “Windy City” nickname.

For those who feel 9)comfortable (comfort) about such a great height there are more relaxing indoor audio Sky Tours.

As a tour guide I have been to the Skywalk 10) discount (count) times and still I can’t help admiring it.
