Education in Britain

1. Education in Britain is compulsory and free for children from five to sixteen years old.

2. Education in Great Britain consists of primary school, secondary school and high school.

3. Primary schools are divided into the infant school (5 to 7) and junior school (7 to 11).

4. In junior school students learn history, geography, science, religion and sometimes a foreign language.

5. Compulsory secondary education consists of five forms and lasts five years.

6. Education is compulsory up until the age of sixteen.

7. At 16 a student can choose to remain at school, transfer to a college or to leave education and seek work.

8. In Scotland students transfer from primary education to secondary education at approximately age 12.

9. Public schools are independent secondary school that changes fees.

10. British universities have a strong reputation both for their history and research output.
