University of California is an Association of 10 public California universities. It is considered to be the best state University in the world and the only state University that is included in the top 10 educational institutions in the world.

The oldest and most prestigious University in the California system is the University of California in Berkeley which was founded in 1868.

Location

History

In 1866, it was purchased by a private California College, which was managed by Henry Durant in 1855. He became the first President of the University.

The University matured under the leadership of Benjamin Wheeler. He was able to attract new proffesors to the University and provide funds for research and scholarships.

Robert Sproul was the next President of the University. During his administration, Berkeley became internationally known as one of the University's largest research centers.

Despite difficulties during the great depression and world war II, Sproul tried to maintain the level of science and education. In 1942, the American Board of education named Berkeley the second most distinguished University after Harvard.

What does it offer?

The University is internationally known as one of the best centers for training specialists in computer and information technologies, economics, and physics. Berkeley scientists played a key role in the development of the atomic bomb during world war II, explained the processes underlying photosynthesis, and discovered a variety of chemical elements. About 29 graduates of this University have been awarded the Nobel prize.

Berkeley offers nearly 8,000 courses and 350 programs leading to a bachelor's, master's, or doctorate degree. Berkeley is a multidisciplinary University where you can study Humanities, natural Sciences, and Engineering. Famous people

Berkeley was home to media Mogul William Randolph Hearst, actor Gregory Peck, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Google Chairman Eric Schmidt. Writer Jack London studied at Berkeley, but did not graduate from the University.
