Peoples activities before and during the holidays
1.Christmas
The holiday has grown in popularity and significance ever since. Santa Claus; brightly decorated Christmas trees; and plenty of wreathes, holly, and ribbons help define the season for most children.
2.Thanksgiving Day
Both the historical and the religious origins of the event have largely given way to a secular celebration centered on the traditional Thanksgiving meal: turkey – an indigenous American bird – accompanied by foods common in early New England settlements, such as pumpkins, squashes, and cranberries
3.Halloween, the eve of All Saints’ Day.
Halloween has become a celebration of witches, ghosts, goblins, and candy that is especially attractive to children. On this day and night, October 31, many homes are decorated and lit by jack-o’-lanterns, pumpkins that have been hollowed out and carved. Children dress up and go trick-or-treating, during which they receive treats from neighbors
4.The Fourth of July, or Independence Day,
It is the premier American national celebration because it comemorates the day the United State proclaimed its freedom from Britain with the Declaration of Independence.
5.The Columbus Day.
The holiday was formerly celebrated on October 12, the day explorer Christopher Columbus first landed in the West Indies, but it is now celebrated on the second Monday of October to allow for a three-day weekend. The holiday originally served as a traditional reminder of the «discovery» of America in 1492, but as Americans became more sensitive to their multicultural population, celebrating the conquest of Native Americans became more controversial
6.The Memorial Day
First this holiday called Decoration Day and celebrated on May 30, was established to honor those who died during the American Civil War (1861-1865), then subsequently those who died in all American wars. Similarly, Veterans Day was first named Armistice Day and marked the end of World War I (1914-1918). During the 1950s the name of the holiday was changed in the United States, and its significance expanded to honor armed forces personnel who served in any American war.
7.May Day
is regarded as the day of solidarity of the workers of the world. It commemorates the tragic events pf the years 1884-88 in Chicago when the workers were fighting for their rights. This is the day of friendship and support.
8.Easter
People dye eggs and present them to their relatives and friends and besides they also go to the church and stay for a service there.
9.Victory Day.
Observed on May 9 it commemorates the Victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders. On that day the veterans meet in the parks and squares of the cities to recollect the days of war and exchange greetings. Wartime music is played everywhere. At night fireworks are let off.
10.New Year
is celebrated with a New Year Tree, presents, Grandpa Frost, European Santa Claus, and a hearty meal. In our country New Year is toasted in champagne at family gatherings. New Year's feasts are widely covered by the mass media.
11.St. Valentine’s Day
People write and sent beautiful greeting cards in the shape of a heart to someone as a sign of love.
12.Women’s Day
It is a spring holiday when all men and children congratulate their mothers and wives on this festive occasion and give them flowers and other presents

Sports and Games
We are sure you are all interested in sport. Many of you certainly play such games as volleyball or football, basketball or tennis.
People who play a game are players. Players form teams and play matches with other teams - their opponents.
Two players playing with each other are partners. Each team can lose or win. In a football match players try to score as many goals as they can.
Most matches take place in large stadiums. Athletics is the most popular sport. People call it "the queen of all sports".
It comprises such kinds of sports as running (for different distances), jumping (long and high jumps) and others.
From time to time international championships and races (horse races, motor races, cycle races) take place.
Representatives of various countries can win gold, silver or bronze medals. Such great championships in sport are organized every
four years and we call them the Olympic Games. Only the best may take part in them.
There are so many kinds of sports, such as cycling, swimming, gymnastics, boxing, skating, skiing, rowing,
yachting and many more in which you can take an active part or just be a devoted fan.
