Compere: Dear friends! I’m very glad to meet you here and to welcome you to our party “Christmas traditions”. Today we’ll tell you about Christmas in England, sing Christmas songs, recite poems, make Christmas cards and write Christmas resolutions.

I’d like to begin our lesson with the poem written by H. Longfellow “Christmas Message”

I heard the bells on Christmas Day.

Their old, familiar carols play,

And wild and sweet

The words repeat

Of peace on Earth,

Good-will to men!

Every year on the 25th of December English people celebrate Christmas. Do you know what Christmas is?

Pupils: Santa Claus, a Christmas tree, a Christmas goose, pudding, Christmas carols, Christmas cards, a Christmas stocking, Christmas presents, crackers.

На экране появляются картинки к каждому символу Рождества. Дети по очереди рассказывают о каждом символе.

  1. Появляется Санта Клаус.

Farther Christmas is St. Nicolas, who through his love of children has become the Santa Claus or Father Christmas. He drives through the skies in a reindeer-drawn sleigh on Christmas Eve loaded with toys and presents for all young people. He comes down every chimney and fills the stocking, the children leave at the foot of their beds, with good things. And now our girls will sing a song “Jolly Old Saint Nicholas”.

  1. Christmas is most colorful holidays of the year. The English like to brighten up their homes at Christmas time with holly, mistletoe and other evergreens. But what is the meaning behind them?

The Christmas tree is the focal point of the decorations in most homes and in almost all countries. The Germans were the first to use the Christmas tree in their celebrations. It was Queen Victoria who began to use it in England. Since then trees have become more and more decorative.

  1. The holly with its brilliant red berries is the most cheerful of all the evergreens the English use at Christmas. It symbolizes life.

  2. At Christmas time carol singers begin to go round the houses in groups. They sing Christmas carols and ask for alms for charities. Listen to one of them. (Звучит песня “Silent night, holy night”).

  3. Christmas pudding, Christmas goose or turkey are on the Christmas dinner table. The Christmas pudding is brought to the table on a large dish. It is covered with white sauce and burning in brandy.

At the top you can see a piece of holly. Usually a coin or two will have been hidden inside it. Part of the fun is to see who finds it. If you find it, it means that you are lucky during this year.

  1. On Christmas Eve English children put their stockings at the end of their beds. They try to stay awake as long as possible to see Farther Christmas. In the morning they find presents in or near their stockings.

  2. Before Christmas people often send cards with Christmas greetings. Do you know who invented Christmas cards? It was Henry Cole, a well-known museum director. He lived in London. Every year he sent short notes to his friends at Christmas, wishing them a happy holiday season.

But in 1843 he had no time for letter writing. He asked an artist to design a card with season greetings. Henry Cole added a tradition to the holiday season. He invented a Christmas card.

Compere: You can make a Christmas card yourself. I’ll show how to do it.

Ведущий показывает, как можно самому сделать рождественскую открытку.

Compere: Now two girls will recite a poem “The First Day of Christmas”, then you will solve some riddles:

Try to riddle them.

  1. What man cannot live in the house? (a snowman)

  2. What is white and falls on the top of the roof? (snow)

  3. It is white, it is cold. You can skate on it. (ice)

  4. In winter and summer it has one color. (a fir tree)

  5. Wooden horses run over the snow without sinking into it. (skies)

Compere: Let’s finish our party with a song “Jingle Bells”.
