Lesson Procedure
I Warmer: ( you may begin like this)
Good Morning, children!
Today we shall speak about our planet the Earth.
II Before reading the text , let's do some vocabulary and gammar exercises
Vocabulary Check This lesson has some words you probably don't know. Read the article again and think about the meanings of the words and phrases below:

the windiest continent
The most fierce gusts of winds
the most hostile
the largest
IV Listening exercise
The aim of this activity is to develop the pupil's listening ability.
.
Open Section "Listening" Find test 4 ,Part C Questions 46-50
Listen twice and do the task. After doing the task check pressing the button "Keys"
If you have many mistakes do it again.
( Questions 46 through 50 arc based on the following short talk.
The world's coldest continent, the Antarctic, has a mean annual temperature of minus seventy degrees Fahrenheit.
Ninety percent of the ice on the earth lies on and around the Antarctic grounds. Seventy percent of the world's fresh water is bound in that ice. If the ice lying there ever melted, it would raise the sea level by approximately 60 feet.
The Antarctic is also the windiest continent in the world. The most fierce gusts of winds there are nearly 200 miles per hour. The conditions there are the most hostile to human inhabitation. They seem hostile to any living being. But strangely enough the Antarctic has the largest population of wildlife anywhere in the world. From microscopic sea vegetation to larger animals such as whales, seals, and penguins, the Antarctic has plenty to offer for biologist's study.
Question 46.
Why is the Antarctic the world's coldest continent?
A) Because 90 percent of the ice on the earth lies there
B) Because it is a land of fierce winds
(C) Because the conditions there are hostile to human inhabitation
(D) Because it has an average annual temperature of-70 F
Question 47.
What would happen if the ice on the Antarctic ever melted?
(A) There would be no scarcity of fresh water in the world.
(B) The sea level would rise about 60 feet.
(C) There would be thunderstorms all over the world.
(D) The Antarctic would become more hospitable to human life.
Question 48.
At what speed do the most fierce winds in the Antarctic blow?
(A) Two hundred miles per hour
(B) Sixty miles per hour
(C) Seventy miles per hour
(D) Ninety miles per hour
Question 49.
Why would a biologist find the Antarctic an interesting continent?
(A) Because it has 90 percent of the planet's ice
(B) Because it is hostile to human life
(C) Because it has the world's largest populations of wildlife
(D) Because it is the windiest continent
Question 50.
Which animal is not an inhabitant of the Antarctic?
(A) Seal
(B) Whale
(C) Penguin
(D) Elephant
V Now , let's open our e-book, Section "Reading", find Test 1
Test 1
Questions 1-10 refer to the following passage.
As viewed from space Earth's distinguishing characteristics are its blue waters and
white clouds. Enveloped by an ocean of air consisting of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen, the
planet is the only one in our solar system known to harbor life. Circling the Sun at an average
distance of 149 million km (93 million miles). Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the
fifth largest planet in the solar system.
Its rapid spin and molten nickel-iron core give rise to an extensive magnetic field
which, coupled with the atmosphere, shields us from nearly all of the harmful radiation
coming from the Sun and other stars. Most meteors burn up in the Earth's atmosphere before
they can strike the surface. The planet's active geological processes have left no evidence of
the ancient it almost certainly received soon after it was formed.
The Earth has a single natural satellite—the Moon.1.
1 Identify the main idea or topic sentence
2Identify the sentences that expand on or support the main idea
3 Read the text for full understanding
4Do the test below
1. Approximately how much of the Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen?
(A) One-fourth
(B) One-half
(C) Three-fourths
(D) All of it
2. Which of the following helps to create Earth's magnetic fields?
(A) Its blue waters
(B) Its nitrogen atmosphere
(C) Its molten metal core
(D) The Moon
3. What two factors help protect the Earth from radiation?
(A) Magnetic field and atmosphere
(B) Rapid spin and molten iron-nickel core
(C) The Sun and the Moon
(D) Blue waters and white clouds
4. In line 2, "consisting" most nearly means
(A) hardening.
(B) containing.
(C) withholding.
(D) shortening
5. Why does the Earth show almost no signs of having been hit by numerous meteors in the
past?
(A) Humans have built over most of the craters.
(B) Most meteors fell into the ocean and not on land.
(C) Earth's magnetic field repeled most meteors.
(D) Earth's natural geologic activity has eliminated most traces.
6. The main idea of this passage is that
(A) there are life-supporting characteristics on Earth.
(B) Earth is predominantly water.
(C) Earth has no common characteristics with other planets.
(D) Earth is the only planet with a moon.
7. The word "distinguishing" as it is used in this selection means
(A) elevating in nature.
(B) devastating in nature.
(C) characteristics like all other planets.
(D) characteristics that set it apart from other planets.
8. It's probable that the next paragraph would discuss
(A) people on planets.
(B) the solar system as a whole.
(C) the Earth's natural satellite—the Moon.
(D) rings around Saturn.
9. As used in this selection, the word "harbor" is synonymous with
(A) support
(B) surround
(C) water
(D) include
10. This selection leads one to believe that
(A) Earth never gets hit by meteors.
(B) Earth always gets hit by meteors.
(C) Earth was hit by meteors in some past time period.
(D) Earth may be bombarded by meteors in the near future.
VI Post-Reading Activities
