Dear students, are you happy? What makes you happy? As for me, my children, my job, and you, my students, make me happy. Does money make you happy? Are the rich happy?
If you can actually count your money then you’re not a rich man».
Look at the blackboard, please. Do you agree with Jean Paul Getty, the richest living American? Why? Now take the card №1. All the cards are on your desk. You can see four quotations about money. Your task is to match the beginnings and the endings of the quotations.
Now look at your partner and guess what he or she has got in their pockets right now. Ask them to answer and show. Now look at the picture (pocket money image) What do you think is the topic of our lesson today?
What does it mean - “pocket money”? Open your books at page 101, ex.1b, and read the definition. Do you have your pocket money? How often? Who gives it to you? How much money do your parents give to you every week? Is it enough for you? What do you usually do when you want to have more money to buy something you need? Do your parents give you money for doing household chores? What does it mean “chores”? Read the definition.
So, what can we do to earn more money? We can do some household chores. Take the card №2. Each of you has one household chore on the list. Go to the blackboard one by one and put it there.
What chores do you do at home and get money for it?
Are there any students who think that you should do all those household chores for free? Have you ever earned money doing odd jobs? What does it mean “odd jobs”? Take the card №3. Each of you has one odd job. Put it on the blackboard, please.
You will hear a conversation between a girl, Lucy, and a boy, Edward, about pocket money. Take the card №4 with the task. After listening, you should decide if each of the six sentences is correct. What would you advise Lucy?
What can we do with our pocket money? We can spend it or save it.
We have just talked about the ways of earning money. Now let’s speak about spending and saving money. Do you prefer to spend it or to save it? What do you usually spend your pocket money on? Name three things you would like to buy right away, if you had enough money. Now open your workbooks at page 75, ex.1a . I’d like you to read about a survey on saving money and some Internet comments to it. What do most children in the UK think about as the result of recent money problems in the country and in the world?
After reading, fill in the chart matching the teenager and his/her comments about saving or spending their pocket money. Please, use the card №5.
(Additional questions – card №6)

We have learnt a lot of new vocabulary today. Let’s revise it: pocket money, chores, odd jobs, to earn, to spend, to save, recession, credit crunch, for free, get paid, amount, stuff .Take the card №7. Your task is to fill in the missing words in the sentences. Mind the tenses.
You have been working very hard today. But I would like you to think what you are going to spend your pocket money on. Think about it and tell me what you would buy right now.
Your homework is Ex.1d, page 77WB. You have to write your comment to the questions in ex. 1a “What are you doing with your money?”
To draw a conclusion, I’d like you to put down your opinion or feelings. Earlier I asked you the question “What makes you happy?” Do you remember your answers? Now choose the idea which suits you best. Let me see your cards. Is it a), b), or c)?
Money rules the world. I need money to do anything in my life.
Money is very important for me but my life is not centered around it.
Money is not happiness. I can give it up for more important things in my life: family, love, friendship.
Thank you for the lesson. Good-bye!
