Can you tell me something about your organisation?

Sergei

Yes, of course. I’m a member of Greenpeace Russia.( участник Гринпис России ) We’ve got thousands members in all parts of the country.

Kate

Greenpeace is famous all over the world.(во всём мире). What does Greenpeace do in Russia?

Sergei -We’ve got many different projects .

Kate - Tell me about one of them.

S ergei -We’re trying to restore(восстановить) the Russian forests. Most people don’t understand the importance(важность) of forests.

Forests produce clean (ощищают) air (воздух) and water. They are home to thousands of plants(растениям) and animals.

They also give work to one and a half million people in Russia.

Kate -What problems have the forests got?

Sergei- We are cutting down (срубаем) too many trees to make wood, but we aren’t planting(сажаем) enough new trees. Years ago there was more control of this. These days there is less (меньше) control. We are working with the Ministry of Natural Resources. One day things will be better.(однажды обстоятельства улучшатся). Every time we cut down a tree, we need to plant(посадить) a tree. It’s very simple . (просто)

-What other projects have you got?

Sergei - One project is Lake Baikal.

Kate- What’s the problem with Lake Baikal?

Sergei- Pollution! (загрязнение)

Lake Baikal is the deepest (самое глубокое) lake in the world

It’s also very clear (чистое).

Lake Baikal is home to many different animals. For example, the number of freshwater seals ([ˈfr e ʃ wɔːtər siːlz] пресноводный тюлени) in Lake Baikal is going down (снижается). We have to protect (должны защитить) them .

Why are there fewer (меньше) seals now?

Because of (из-за) the pollution in the lake.

There is a paper factory that puts its waste (отходы) directly (прямо) into the lake.
