Приложение

Каждой группе предложены следующие тексты и задания.

1-st group «Ancient Greece»

Text 1 (с этим текстом работали все группы на предыдущих уроках, он предлагается и каждой группе и на этом уроке).

The Olympics

The Olympics have a very long history. They began in 776 BC and took place every four years

for nearly 1200 years, at Olympia, in Greece. They included many different kinds of sport: running, boxing, wrestling, pentathlon (five different sports).

The Olympic emblem is five interlinked rings: blue, yellow, black, green and red. Each colour means a continent: blue for Europe, yellow for Asia, black for Africa, green for Australia and red colour is for America.

The Olympic Games were for men only in ancient Greece. Greek women were forbidden not only participate but also to watch the Olympics.

The Olympic Games took place every four years, and the time between two games was known as an “Olympiad”. The ancient Greeks had no winter sports. Only in 1924 the 1-st Winter Games were held in France.

Text 2

A Letter from Ancient Greece

Written in 764 BC

My friend!

I don’t know who you are, the person who will find my letter, but I’m writing to you about my son. He is a hero - he has won the running competition! Maybe you haven’t heard about the Olympic Games, so I’ll explain you what they are.

The first Olympics were held 12 years ago. It was a part of a great religious festival that was held in honour of the Olympic Gods. The best athletes compete in running. We call it sprint. The athletes should run the distance of one hundred and eight meters. I’m so proud because today it was my son who did it the fastest.

The Games are so important that even wars are stopped when they are held. They contain only one sports event – sprint competition, but I sure that very soon the programme will include a lot of other sports like jumping, wrestling, racing and riding.

2-nd group «Olympic Symbols»

Text

The symbols of the Olympic Games are five interlinked rings, the Olympic Flame, a mascot (something or somebody who brings lucky and happiness) and the motto.

The famous flag of the International Olympic Committee shows 5 rings of different colours linked together (they stand for 5 continents).

The Olympic Flame was in honour of Zeus, the supreme god of Greek religion. Nowadays the Olympic Flame symbolies the spirit of the Olympic Games. Lit by a unigue method, the Olympic Flame burns from the opening till the clothing of each of the Olympics.

The motto of the Olympic Games is “Citius, altius, forties” which is Latin for “Faster, higher, stronger”.

The main idea of the Olympic Games is in the words: “The important thing is not winning but taking part” said by Baron Pierre de Coubertin.
