S.G. Pisakhov

Stepan Grigorievich Pisakhov, the famous Northern writer of fairy-tales, was born in Arkhangelsk in 1879. His father was a jeweler, a man of remarkable artistic taste, his mother and grandmother who came from Pinega area knew a lot of folk tales and epics. 1) _____________________.

On finishing the Arkhangelsk town school in 1901 Pisakhov entered an art school in St. Petersburg. However in 1905 for the participation in a meeting against tsarism he was expelled from the school and deprived of the right to get further education in Russia.

For two years young Pisakhov travelled around the world. He visited Greece, Egypt, and Palestine, studied in Rome and Paris. 2) _______________. Pisakhov wrote in one of his letters that it was a torture for him to live through the winters without snow.

On returning to Russia Pisakhov did not lose passion for travelling. But now he travelled only around the Russian North, both on his own and as a member of arctic expeditions in the capacity of a painter, ethnographer and folklorist. 3) ___________.

No wonder, the people and nature of the North became the main theme of his creative work.

Pisakhov first became known as a painter. He took part in several exhibitions in Moscow and Petersburg and was awarded prizes for his creations. For many years he also worked as a teacher of drawing in School №3 in Arkhangelsk.

But real fame came when Stepan Grigorievich started writing fairy-tales. For years he performed his fairy-tales orally. The first one appeared in print in 1924 and only 14 years later (1938) the first collection of his literary fairy-tales was published.

Pisakhov’s fairy-tales are strikingly original. No one else writes in this colourful northern manner, preserving the peculiarities of Pomors’s speech.

Most of the tales are written in the person of Senya Malina, whose prototype was a real peasant from the village of Uyma. Senya symbolizes courage, wit and cunning of the Pomor people. He can do anything – catch winds, stretch himself 18 miles, etc. 4) _________________. Notably Pisakhov entitled his early fairy-tales “The Northern Münchhausen or Münchhausen from the village of Uyma”.

“Lying” or rather exaggeration is Pisakhov’s favourite literary device. He proceeds from a real fact or detail and through exaggeration develops it into a cock-and-bull story. In any case all Pisakhov’s tales are full of love for the North and its peole. The well-known Russian writer L. Leonov wrote to S.G. Pisakhov, “I cannot imagine the North without you”. Many of us could sign to these words. (Региональный компонент государственного стандарта общего образования Архангельской области/Иностранный язык – Департамент образования и науки Архангельской области, 2006).
