The Royal family is a part of British life. Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State in many countries besides Britain. Her husband is Prince Philip. Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, is the Queen's eldest son .

British children go to school at the age of 4 or 5. They go to kinder-garden. Then they go to secondary school at the age of 10 or 11. There are different types of school: grammer, secondary, technical schools. After finishing school they go to Universities or Colleges. In English schools pupils have to adress men teachers ''Sir'' and women teachers ''Miss'' or ''Mrs''.

The word "kilt" is from Gaelic language, it means "to belt clothes around the body". this word originates from ancient Scandinavian " kjilt" , that came from Vikings, who worn such clothes, but without tartan. Kilt is a skirt worn by Scottish warriors. It's made of 5 or 6 yards of cloth. Tartan is an ornament that consists of different colored crossing vertical and horizontal lines. It was show the social status.

All nations have their own customs and traditions. British people are different from other nations. Englishmen are conservative people.
To this day an English family prefers a house with a garden to a flat in a modern house with central heating. English people like gardens.
Englishmen are proud of their traditions and carefully keep them up. It has been the law for about three hundred years that all the theatres are closed on Sundays. No letters are delivered, only a few Sunday papers are published.
Holidays are especially rich in old traditions and are different in Scotland, Ireland, Wales and England
