No household in the English-speaking countries can be imagined without the Bible and the works of William Shakespeare. They are symbols of Religion and Culture.

The greatest of all playwrights and poets of all times

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays,154 sonnets,4 poems

He’s credited with creating 3000 words in the English Oxford Dictionary.

Shakespeare invented lots of words that we use in our daily speech.

1. ADDICTION ("склонность, чрезмерное пристрастие")

“ OTHELLO”:

“ It is Othello's pleasure, our noble and valiant general, that, upon certain tidings now arrived, importing the mere perdition of the Turkish fleet, every man put himself into triumph; some to dance, some to make bonfires, each man to what sport and revels his  addiction  leads him.” – Herald

"Отелло, нашему благородному и доблестному генералу, угодно, ввиду ныне поступивших достоверных сообщений о полной гибели турецкого флота, чтобы все и каждый предались ликованию: пусть танцуют, пусть зажигают потешные огни, пусть развлекаются и веселятся, всякий соответственно своим склонностям" - Герольд

2. ADVERTISING ("реклама, продвижение")

“ MEASURE for MEASURE”

Come hither, Isabel. Your friar is now your prince: as I was then Advertising  and holy to your business, Not changing heart with habit, I am still Attorney'd at your service." – Vincentio.

"Прошу вас, подойдите, Изабелла. Ваш духовник - теперь ваш государь. Но, рясу сняв, не снял я вместе с нею С себя святого долга вам служить." - Герцог

3. ASSASSINATION ("убийство по политическим мотивам")

“ MACBETH”

“ If it were done when 'tis done, then 'twere well it were done quickly: if the  assassination  could trammel up the consequence, and catch with his surcease success.” – Macbeth

"Когда конец кончал бы все, - как просто! Все кончить сразу! Если бы убийство Могло свершиться и отсечь при этом Последствия, так чтоб одним ударом Все завершалось и кончалось здесь" - Макбет

4.BELONGINGS

( “cобственность, имущество, принадлежности)”

“ Thyself and thy belongings are not thine own so proper as to waste thyself upon thy virtues, they on thee.” – Duke Vincentio

5. EYEBALL ("глазное яблоко")

"Буря", Акт I, Сцена II:

“ Go make thyself like a nymph o' the sea: be subject to no sight but thine and mine, invisible to every eyeball else.” – Prospero, Tempest, Act II.

"Ступай и обернись морскою нимфой;

Будь видим мне - и никому другому." - Просперо

6. FASHIONABLE ("модный")

“ Troilus and Cressida”:

“ For time is like a fashionable host that slightly shakes his parting guest by the hand, and with his arms outstretch'd, as he would fly, grasps in the comer: welcome ever smiles, and farewell goes out sighing.” – Ulysses

"Ведь Время, как хозяин дальновидный,

Прощаясь, только руку жмет поспешно,

Встречая ж - в распростертые объятья

Пришедших заключает."- Улисс

7. HOT-BLOODED ("пылкий, страстный")

Совместив два слова "hot" и "blood", английский драматург создал прекрасную метафору.

Кстати, выражение "cold-blooded" ("хладнокровный") - это тоже шекспировских рук дело!

"King Lear”:

“ Why, the hot-blooded France, that dowerless took our youngest born, I could as well be brought to knee his throne, and, squire-like; pension beg to keep base life afoot.” – Lear

"Я б мог скорей у пылкого Француза,

Что нищей взял меньшую нашу дочь,

8. LONELY ("одинокий, в одиночку")

“ Coriolanus”:

"All the lonely people, where do they all come from?" Ах, сколько прекрасных англоязычных песен не появилось бы на свет, если бы не Шекспир!

"Кориолан":

"I go alone,

Like to a lonely dragon, that his fen

Makes fear'd and talk'd of more than seen—your son

Will or exceed the common or be caught

With cautelous baits and practise." - Coriolanus

"Удаляюсь ныне,

Подобно одинокому дракону,

Что страшен и в болотном далеке.

Верь, если не падет от подлых козней,

То отличится заново твой сын." - Кориолан

9. LUGGAGE ("багаж, вещи")

Невероятно нужное слово! Ну какое без него путешествие?

“ TEMPEST”:

"Hence, and bestow your luggage where you found it." - Alonso

"Идите, положите эти вещи,

Где вы нашли их." - Алонзо

10. MANAGER ("управляющий, менеджер")

“ A Midsummer Night's Dream”:

Where is our usual manage r of mirth?

What revels are in hand? Is there no play

To ease the anguish of a torturing hour?” – King Theseus.

"Где наш изобретатель развлечений?

Что он для нас готовит? Нет ли зрелищ,

Many centuries have passed since his death, but Shakespeare is still considered to be the greatest of all playwrights and poets. His plays are still acted in the whole world.
