«AMERICAN MEALS»

AMERICAN MEALS. Typical American meals are barbecue, grilled vegetables and ribs. A very beverage is lemon tea. In the morning Americans have a bowl of cereal, bacon, egg, toast with jelly and a bagel. The usual noontime meal consists of something light and quick to eat. It may be a hot dog or a hamburger. After work people often have dinner. It consists of milk, and some meat. Americans also enjoy carrots, peas, spinach, beets, tomatoes and green beans. The meat could be chicken, turkey, beef or pork. They seldom seat at the table and eat very long. They “eat and run”.

I . Организационный этап.

1. приветствие

Hallo boys and girls! How are you today?

(I’m fine, thanks! I’m well! Not bad! So-so!)

I’m glad you’re well today. Now smile each other and let’s begin our lesson. Agree that everyone wants to be well and happy. What comes to your mind when you think about a happy life?

(Good relations. Love. Health. Family. Friends. Education. Friendship…)

I’m sure all is important for you. But what comes first? But before you answer my question I want to suggest you to listen one story-poem.

Once upon a time

There lived a noble king.

Firstly he was fine

And brave and used to win.

He loved his magic garden tree,

A symbol of his life.

He ate a lot and drank,

And lighting cigarette became

His own brand,

And laziness, indifference were

Coming nearby him,

The king forgot about his role, how to reign and to win.

He thought he was happy man

Just up the time when he…

Became the weakest in the land

Or in the world may be.

He asked for doctors, mixtures, pills

And noticed one day…

The tree started loosing

All its leaves

Becoming dry and bare.

What was the reason?

What was happened?

I think together we can answer,

And we shall help the tree.

Why do you think the tree started loosing its leaves? Was the king a happy man? Why?

(He wasn’t happy because he was unhealthy and he had bad habits. He lost his health.)

And what about the king’s tree? What symbol it was?

(it symbolized the king’s life. But his life became unhealthy and the tree started loosing its leaves.)

And that’s why I think that our health is the most important thing for us.

Look at the blackboard. You have crossword with key-words. You should guess that words but before that you should answer my question: What is a healthy way of life?

Good! You’re well done! Now you can read the theme of our lesson.

And now you should read and translate the proverb: “TO HAVE A HEALTHY MIND YOU MUST HAVE A HEALTHY BODY”. And while working don’t forget it!

==========

  1. As you know our health depends on several factors. And what are they?

2. Try to explain the meaning of some words with their expressions:

1. MEAL

A. to have a feeling caused by a desire to eat

2. TO BE HUNGRY

B. food we eat a certain times of the day

3. TO BE THIRSTY

C. illness

4. BREAKFAST

D. to remain fit by doing exercise and sport

5. DESSERT

E. to have a feeling caused by a desire to drink

6. TO KEEP FIT

F. the meal eaten in the morning

7. TO BE SLIM

G. the energy value of food

8. DISEASE

H. to eat something in a hurry

9. TO SNACK

I. to have an attractive thin and well shaped body

10. CALORIE

J. course of fruit, etc at the end of the meal

3. Speaking about healthy life we realize some people care about their health, others don’t. What good health habits do people have? And what bad habits do they have?

  1. smoking

  2. drinking alcohol

  3. taking drugs

  4. eating too many sweets

  5. snacking

  6. inactivity

  1. dieting

  2. eating low fat food

  3. exercising

  4. sport

  5. wholemeal bread

  6. fruit and vegetables

  7. regular meals

4. Answer the following questions. But now you may use ex.4 p. 105 in your books:

What does smoking cause?

What does drinking alcohol cause? And what does it make?

What does taking drugs cause?

5. Our health depends on the foods we eat. Look at the screen, read and translate some proverbs:

After dinner sit a while, after supper walk a mile.

The appetite comes with eating.

A spoon is dear when lunch time is near.

Tastes differ.

The last piece of meat is especially sweet.

6. Now let’s play a game. Take these cards and match the group for these foods.

1. Red (stop and think) 2. Yellow (eat carefully) 3. Green (enjoy your meal)

7. Each country has its own eating habits and traditions. You have three texts for each group. You should read and understand these texts then answer my questions.

RUSSIAN MEALS. The usual meals in Russia are breakfast, dinner and supper. Russian people prefer omelets, boiled or fried eggs or just some porridge. They are 3 coursers in Russian dinner. For the first course they usually have soup: schi, borsch, rice soup with meat and potatoes, chicken broth. For the second course they like eating fried meat, cutlets with potatoes. For dessert they take stewed fruit, tea with lemon and sugar. The best typical Russian food is okroshka, pelmeni. You’ll never leave Russian table being hungry.

ENGLISH MEALS. A modern English breakfast is mostly a help yourself thing. You can have a cheese sandwich, some toast with jam or a bowl of very low in calories corn flakes with fat free milk. You can have breakfast on your lap while reading a newspaper and nobody is nagging you about your manners. Vegetables like lettuce, onion, beans and favourite English accompaniments. As for drinks you can have a nice wine or a cup of coffee.

Now answer the questions about the text:

AMERICAN MEALS

What are typical American meals?

What do Americans have in the morning?

When do they often have dinner?

RUSSIAN MEALS

What are the usual meals in Russia?

What do they usually have for the first

course?

What is the best Russian food?

ENGLISH MEALS

What is a modern English breakfast?

What can they have as for drinks?

  1. What do you about Russian cuisine? Match the words and their explanations:

PELMENI

VINIGRETTE

KASHA

KISSEL

OKROSHKA

BLINI

a. Russian salad; it is a mixture of vegetables, boiled and chopped

c. Russian dumpling filled with meat

d. thin fruit jelly made from fruit or berry juice

e. cabbage soup

f. pancakes

g. cereal pudding made of oats, rice, manna groats

h. Soup with kvass, boiled eggs, cucumbers and other vegetables

  1. And now we’re going to read a text about the man you can see in the picture

What can you say about him?

stout

What does he have for breakfast?

doesn’t look strong

hates sport

Does he want to loose weight?

unhealthy

enjoy watching TV

What measures should he taken to be healthy?

has got weak muscles

inactivity

  1. Oh! Look! What beautiful tree we have again! But you must remember all these advices you give that man.

  1. And now I want you remember all our lexic. Take the cards and do the task.

You have some minutes.

correct the mistakes:
