Appearance of the Albatross

The albatross is a strong large-bodied bird with some variations of white, black or gray coloration. The long orange or yellow beak is curved at the end and contains many horned plates. It also has tubes along the sides that allow it to measure airspeed in flight.

Albatross Behavior

The albatross is very well adapted for long periods of stay in the open sea. They combine the ability to float in the air with the ability to swim on water. Although the Albatross is more vulnerable on the water, it has to go down from time to time to feed and drink from the ocean.

Diet

Albatrosses feed primarily on squid or schooling fish. Albatrosses have a special place in maritime lore and superstition, most memorably evoked in Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

Albatross habitat

The albatross is native to the Southern Hemisphere around Antarctica, South America, South Africa and Australia. In the distant past, it was widespread in most of the Northern Hemisphere, but now only a few species live in the North Pacific Ocean between Alaska, California, Hawaii and Japan. Being able to eat seafood and drink salt water, the Albatross has few problems crossing open oceans.

Life expectancy

The albatross has a lifespan of up to 50 years, but several longer-lived individuals have been observed. Many albatrosses do not survive the juvenile stage.

Relationship with Humans

Some albatross species were heavily hunted for feathers that were used as down and in the manufacture of women's hats and the birds were an important part of human diet in the region.
