William Shakespeare (1564-1616) William Shakespeare is one of the best-known writers in the English language.  He wrote 38 plays, as well as hundreds of poems.  He was born in Stafford in 1564 and grew up there,received  an education in Latin at the local grammar school.  By 1590, he was living in London, although he not produced is most famous plays yet.  The great love story Romeo and Juliet appeared four years later and is still a favorite of many people.  The story of Romeo and Juliet appeared in many different forms since then.  In 1996, for example, it was made into a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio.  People performing Shakespeare's plays today all over the world and in many different languages.

Oscar Wilde (16.10.1854 - 30.11.1900) The Irish writer and poet. In his works, especially in his tales, he glorifies beauty, and not only the beauty of nature or artificial beauty, but the beauty of devoted love. He admires unselfishness, kindness and generosity ( The V Happy Prince, The Nightingale and the Rose ) and despises egoism and greed ( The Selfish Giant, The Devoted Friend ). The theme of most of his works, even of his tales, is quite realistic. He shows the contrast between wealth and poverty. His own sympathy for poor, labouring people is quite evident.  Oscar Wilde is best known for writing The Picture of Dorian Gray.

Walter Scott (1771-1832) The famous English writer Walter Scott (1771 — 1832) is the founder of the historical novel in English literature. He was greatly interested in the past of his country and studied it by documents, history and legends. Among the historical novels of Waiter Scott Ivanhoe is one of the best. It describes the even ts of the 12th cen­tury during the reign of Richard I the Zion-Hearted. The power in England at that time was in. the hands of the Normans, who oppressed the native Anglo-Saxon popula­tion. There were serious conflicts between the Anglo-Sax­on nobility and the Normans. In his novel Walter Scott wanted to show how, as years passed, the Anglo-Saxons and the Normans became one nation.
