the differences between the Grammar Translation Approach and the Direct Approach

Which approach most closely aligns with your current teaching style?

 

These two approaches are different and firstly I'd like to mention speaking aspect. While the Grammar Translation Approach doesn't use speaking at all, in the Direct Approach speaking is a central concept. Also these approaches has different goals – the Grammar Translation Approach is focused on teaching culture and morality, but a purpose of the Direct Approach is to teach students speaking naturally, to learn about other culture with people and traveling in a real life. Accordingly every approach has different content: if in the Grammar Translation Approach the main tool is classical books, in the Direct Approach teachers use only life dialogs and conversations. The students' practice in the Grammar Translation Approach consists of translation, reading and learning new words.
