Types of information sources

Following a discovery or event, information flows through different publications over time. This differs between subjects but in general:

Primary sources is where new research or theories are first revealed, they are the firsthand documents that provide direct evidence on your topic. The Library of Congress refers to them as the "raw materials of history — original documents and objects which were created at the time under study. They are different from secondary sources, accounts or interpretations of events created by someone without firsthand experience." These sources include journals and conferences.

Secondary sources provides a more digested overview of a subject e.g. books. They are interpretations and evaluations of primary sources. Secondary sources are not evidence, but rather commentary on and discussion of evidence.

Tertiary sources records facts and brief descriptions of key information, as in reference material. It presents summaries or condensed versions of materials, usually with references back to the primary and/or secondary sources.
