Проблемные задания для эссе и личного письма:

1. You’ve been asked to write an article about the most attractive place in your city (town). Think about why Magnitogorsk / Chelyabinsk is so attractive and interesting for tourists.

2. Your friend wants to visit your town on holidays. Write him/her a letter about the most beautiful place in Magnitogorsk / Chelyabinsk you can show. Make notes on: where it is; how large it is; some historical information; some special facts.

3. Imagine that your school wants to organize the festival CULTURAL DIVERSITY IN OUR REGION. A) You need to think of an interesting programme to be sent to participants and guests and write it down in the provided space. Do not forget to give details of the festival events, time schedule and place. Give any additional information concerning the festival which you think is important. B) Write a letter to your friend from another school. Describe the festival programme and persuade him/her to take part in the festival. Specify the event you want him/her to take part in (100-120 words).

1. Imagine you are interested in doing voluntary work connected with the protection of the local environment. Write a letter to the head of the organization called “The Volunteer Agency” that runs a number of local environmental projects.

2. There were two surveys conducted in 1990 and in 2010 about the popularity of different means of travelling among citizens in Magnitogorsk. Analyze the table showing the participants’ opinion and write a short report on the changes presented in it.

1. Research shows that young people in Magnitogorsk today are not as healthy as they were twenty years ago. Why is this and can we do anything about it? Write down your ideas.

2. Think of a good day-off programme in your town for

a) your parents’ friends (they are about 45-50 years old)

b) a couple with a 5 – year-old baby

c) your pen-friend from London (he\she is interested in sports)

d) a group of international participants of Art festival

e) your relatives from countryside

Don’t forget to give details of time schedule and places, keep in mind people’s age and interests

1. From the list of proverbs choose one proverb and describe its meaning.

3. Read the following text, find the proverb in it and explain it.

“The Vain Stag”

One hot day a big stag who had a pair of very large antlers stood on the bank of a river. He was thirsty and went down to the water to drink. Suddenly he saw his reflection in the water. He was very pleased with what he saw. “Oh,” he said, “what a beautiful pair of antlers I’ve got! How fine my head is! How proud I look! Nobody has such beautiful antlers as I have. Perhaps some people will say that my antlers are too big, but I don’t think so. I like them very much.” And the vain stag looked again at his reflection in the water.

Suddenly he heard the dogs. Three hunters and their dogs came out of the forest. The stag ran across the field into the forest. He was already far from the dogs, but he caught his antlers in the branches of some low trees and could not go on.

The dogs ran up to him and pulled him to the ground. Then the hunters came up and killed him. So his beautiful antlers, of which he had been so vain, were the cause of his death. Pride goes before a fall.

4. Read given text once again and describe main character with the help of proverb.

5. Compare English proverb “It never rains but it pours” and Russian one «Беда не приходит одна».

6. Imagine that you have a friend in England or USA. And one of his letters was finished by such proverb Friends are thieves of time. What do you think about this proverb? Is it correct? If you agree with this statement, you will write to your foreign friend answer that proves this statement. If you disagree, your answer will contain denial. In both cases you have to argue your answer.

10. Imagine that your friend and you tried to get CD of your favorite group for free but couldn’t do it. Someone told you: “He that would eat the fruit must climb the tree”. You agreed with it and your friend didn’t. Prove it to your friend. Use proverbs that you know in your dialogue.

4. Суть игры "Я знаменитый" заключается в том, что игроки сидя в кругу пишут друг другу имена известных личностей или персонажей и приклеивает бумагу с именем другому игроку на лоб. Таким образом, у каждого игрока на лбу имя знаменитости которого он не знает, но видят все вокруг. После чего начинается игра, в процессе которой игрок задает вопросы "о себе". Допускаются вопросы на которые можно ответить только «да» или «нет». Игрок может задавать вопросы о себе только до того момента как ему ответят "нет". Далее очередь переходит следующему игроку. В качестве угадываемой информации могут быть не только имена известных людей мира \ страны \ региона, но и известные учащимся достопримечательности.

5. Учащимся предлагается заранее подготовить схематично нарисованную карту района, в котором они живут (а может это будет google maps), на карту в виде символов наносятся реальные объекты (магазины, библиотеки, больницы, стадионы, школы и т.п.). Далее возможны многочисленные варианты использования данных заготовок: учащийся «сопровождает» комментариями своего друга по карте, перемещаясь от одного объекта к другому; учащийся пытается воссоздать схему района своего оппонента, размещая символы объектов на пустой карте; заполняет пробелы в предъявленном тексте с пропусками, ориентируясь по предъявленной карте и т.д.
