We are all interested in the origin of words, in how they appear and die.

The rise of English is a story of wonderful success.

When Julius Caesar came to Britain 2000 year ago, English didn’t exist.

In the 5^th century it was already spoken by some people in Britain.

A thousand years later English was the native language of 6 million people.

But it was spoken only in Britain.

Nowadays 750 hundred people all over the world use it.

For a half it’s a mother tongue.

English is the richest language in the world, it’s got about 500 thousand words.

It’s more widely spoken and written than any other language.

It has become the 1^st truly global language.

It’s the language of business, science and sport.

English is and has always been constantly changing.

Some words change their meanings and new words appear in the language.

In modern English there are many words borrowed from Latin, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch and other languages.
