One Saturday last winter, my best friends Amy, Maria, Greg, Andy and I decided to spend the weekend in my uncle’s big, old house in the country. It was stormy outside, so we decided to spend a cozy evening chatting together in the living room downstairs.

Suddenly, there was a powerful gust of wind. The lights flickered and then went out altogether. "What was that?" I said. "Don it worry, John, it is just a power cut" Greg reassured me. We carried on laughing and telling scary stories in the dark. After a while, there was a bright flash of lightning that lit up the whole room. There was a loud gasp. "Andy is missing!" Amy cried.

We all looked at each other confused and scared, because no one had seen Andy leave the room. We felt our way around the house, calling Andy, but there was no reply. We went back to the living room and tried to think of what to do next. Just then, there was a loud snore from the corner of the room. At that moment, the lights came back on. There was Andy, fast asleep on a big, velvet sofa!

Andy sat up sleepily, rubbing his eyes."Oh good, the lights are back on!"he said. "I was sleepy and felt like a snooze. I didn’t want anyone to trip over me so I crawled over me so I crawled over here. We were all very relieved.

Reading

The Earth is our home, but much of it is dirty and dying. By the year 2030, scientists report that 25% of all animals, birds, fish and insects may be extinct.

Every year man cuts down more trees to provide paper, wood, medicines, mineral fuel. But it's not only trees and forests which are disappearing. Animals, insects and flowers are destroyed, too. Is there any solution? People should protect certain areas and plant new forests.Cars and factories pollute air, water and land. They can also be dangerous for people, wildlife and environment.

One of Europe's and North America's most serious pollution problems is "acid rain". This happens when factories send gases and chemicals into the air. There they mix, and the mixture is carried for hundreds of miles by the wind and finally falls back to earth. This "acid rain" kills fish and trees. It slowly destroys everything. Industrial countries should control their level of pollution and try to reduce the acid rain effect.

At the moment, 94% of the world's energy comes from oil, gas and coal. But these "fossil fuels" won't last forever. There's only enough oil and gas for the next 50 years. Coal will last longer - perhaps about 300 years. And then? Well, one answer is nuclear energy. But today, after Chernobyl, many people think it's too dangerous. There are four solutions.

They all use natural energy in the environment: wind energy, wave energy (from the sea), and geothermal energy (from "hot" rocks under the ground). It's clean and natural, but there is another problem: they all rather expensive.

Today, many scientists and world leaders realize that the Earth is in danger. Either we stop killing the Earth or we kill ourselves. We need a cleaner, healthier planet.

With the words "Elementary, my dear Watson...", the most famous detective of all times, Sherlock Holmes, starts to explain something to his friend, Dr. Watson. That phrase has now entered the English language.

Sherlock Holmes first appeared in 1882. He became famous in "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes". After that came the whole series of books about him: "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes", "The Return of Sherlock Holmes", "The Hound of Baskervilles" and many others. Many thousands of books about Sherlock Holmes are still sold every year.

Who invented Sherlock Holmes? Arthur Conan Doyle was his inventor. He was a doctor. In 1882 he moved from Scotland to England to set up a practice. One of the doctors he worked with, Dr. Joseph Bell, was the model for Sherlock Holmes's friend, Dr. Watson. Conan Doyle's medical knowledge was a great help to him in his detective stories.

Conan Doyle started the fashion of the detective story, which goes on.

And what sort of man is Sherlock Holmes? We learn a lot about him from the stories in which he appears. He is a quiet man, who only speaks when he has something to say. He smokes a pipe (he has a collection of them). He plays the violin. He carries a large magnifying glass. He lives at 22 IB Baker Street in London.

If you go to London, you will not be able to find 22 IB Baker Street. But instead, you can go to a pub called the "Sherlock Holmes". In that pub there is a room exactly like Sherlock Holmes's room at 221B Baker Street as described in Conan Doyle's stories.

William Shakespeare, the greatest English writer of drama, was born in 1564 in Stratford-on-Avon. We do not know everything about Shakespeare's early life. But we know that he studied at the Grammar School in Stratford, and that he became interested in the theatre when he was still a boy.

In 1586 Shakespeare went to London, where he worked in the theatre for some years before he began to write his own plays.

Shakespeare soon became well-known in London literary circles. Every play that he wrote was good news to the people of the capital. Queen Elizabeth I liked Shakespeare's plays, and the actors were often invited to play before the Queen and later before the King James - a great honor in those days. By the end of the 16 century Shakespeare and his friends had enough money to build their own theatre - the famous Globe Theatre.

But Shakespeare had quite many difficulties in his life. Less talented writers, whose plays were worse than his, often quarreled with Shakespeare and attacked him, the actors in his own theatre sometimes turned against him.

Now people in many countries love and honorShakespeare for his plays, comedies and tragedies that are still modern and well-known all over the world.

  4. He was a man who wrote many plays and acted himself.

About half of British young people aged 12 to 16 read teenage magazines! Two of the most popular magazines for girls are 'Sugar' and 'Bliss'. They have glossy, colourful covers and include beauty and fashion, celebrity gossip, real life stories, horoscopes, quizzes and problem pages. Of course, boys don't usually find these magazines very interesting! Instead, they buy music magazines like 'NME'or magazines about sport, like 'Shoot'or 'Match'. Usually, teenage magazines contain a lot of language that only teenagers use! They might use 'celeb' instead of celebrity, for example, or 'fave' instead of favourite. They also say 'lads' instead of 'boys', 'dosh' instead of 'money' and 'natter' instead of 'talk to your friends'! This makes the magazines more attractive to teenagers and easier to understand. On a more serious note though, a lot of these magazines can help teens find solutions to problems they don't feel comfortable discussing with their parents. That's why the problem pages in these magazines are very popular. In fact, many teens buy them just for the problem page. How about you? What do you like most in magazines?

People shop a lot. We buy clothes, food, music, mobile phones, and millions of other things - for what seems like a million different reasons. Obviously, we buy things because we need them. But sometimes it's just to fit in. Sometimes we buy stuff and we just don't know why. Everything we buy affects the environment, but some choices are better than others. We have the power to make those choices. We can. Buy smart. Take some time to think before you buy something - maybe you don't really need it. Send a virtual e-card instead of a paper birthday card. Buy things that will last a long time, such as rechargeable batteries. Share with friends. Maybe you and your friends like the same video games. Why don't you share or swap your games instead of buying one each? Buy recycled. Fewer natural resources are used to produce recycled items, which helps the environment. Read the labels and choose recycled! In 2002. 90% teenagers reported buying a product for a good cause. What have you been doing since?
