Read about autumn festivals in English-speaking countries.

Halloween
People in Great Britain and the USA celebrate Halloween on the 31st of October. In the past, it was the day when winter started. Winter nights are long and dark, so people made special lamps and told each other scary stories. Nowadays, children dress up in costumes like ghosts, witches, and superheroes. They go trick-or-treating, which means they visit houses to ask for sweets. They also make pumpkin lanterns with funny or scary faces.

Thanksgiving
American people celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday in November. It is a time for families to come together and say thanks for what they have. People often eat a big dinner that includes turkey, sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie. Many families also watch football games. In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated earlier, on the second Monday in October.

Bonfire Night
British people celebrate Bonfire Night, or Guy Fawkes Nights on the 5th of November. This holiday remembers a man named Guy Fawkes, who tried to bomb the Houses of Parliament, but was arrested. People light bonfires and set off fireworks. Children make a figure of Guy Fawkes and burn it on a bonfire.
