In autumn of 1941 fascists came to Moscow. Hitler wanted to destroy our capital. The best tanks and planes stormed Moscow from September to December 1941. The fascist generals were preparing for a victory parade, but the Soviet soldiers stayed.

In December our army under the command of Georgy Zhukov could pushed back The Nazis from Moscow for hundreds of kilometers. For the first time in the history of that war the fascist army was defeated in the battle for Moscow. The Soviet people began to believe in their future victory. But fascists were a success to capture Belorussia, Ukraine, Crimea and Caucasus. They reached the banks of the Volga near Stalingrad.

Army of the Nazis was still strong. Only the banks of the Volga were to stop the enemy. Here in the battle for Stalingrad 1942-1943 the fate of our country was. To retreat further was impossible! During the fighting in the city there was not a whole building. Every house, factory, station was turned into a fortress. The hero of the battle of Stalingrad Vasily Zaitsev said: "We stood and will stand to death!" Our army took the offensive and defeated the enemy. The bravest soldiers were awarded orders and medals, but many after death. The Nazi troops were retreating, but fighting fiercely for every inch of captured land.

On Mamaev Kurgan we can see a monument fighting the country: a woman puts a sword to strike the enemy.

According to the plan “Barbarossa” in the summer of 1941 Hitler was planning to conquer the USSR in two months. The main city in the northern direction was Leningrad. On September 8 1941 the Germans encircled Leningrad and the siege began.

There was no food, energy, water. People died from cold, bombardments and starvation, especially in the winter of 1941–1942. In conditions of extreme temperatures and city transport being out of service, even a distance of a few kilometers to a food kiosk was impossible for many people. In January–February 1942, about 700–1,000 men died every day, most of them from hunger.

The siege lasted for 900 days.

641,000 people died in Leningrad during the Siege. The Piskariovskoye Memorial Cemetery is a resting place to over 500,000 people and a timeless reminder of the heroic deeds of the city.

In the spring of 1945, the Soviet Union and its allies fought the last battles against the Nazis. In May, 1945 after hard battles, the Soviet troops took by storm Berlin - the capital of fascist Germany. Two Soviet soldiers Egorov and Kantariya put up the flag of our Motherland on the top of Reichstag in the centre of Berlin...

Hitler wanted to destroy all the Soviet people in a short period of time. But all his plans failed, because our soldiers, officers and leaders were clever and brave.

In 4 long years came the Great Victory. Why did our army, our people win it? It was possible because it was the war for our independence and liberation. Because all people of our multinational country fought together on the fronts and everybody from children to old men worked in the rear.

It was possible because people fought for their native country, for every town, for every house, for every piece of their native land.

They fought for their mothers, wives, children. They fought for their future, for our future.

The belief into their families helped our defenders very much, gave them strength to fight, to be brave, to do heroic actions.

A lot of people met their death during this war. How are they remembered by the Russian people, by present generation?

We name the streets, the squares, cities and towns after their names. They brought the Victory for us and they are living in our hearts in the names of our streets, parks squares and we can say to those who fell for our country, who sleep at the grave carved on the gravestone “Your deed is immortal”.
