Westminster Abbey has been the setting for every monarch’s coronation, beginning with Edward the Confessor, a saintly man who came to the throne in 1040. The Abbey presents a pageant of noble, military, political and artistic history. It has the graves of queens and kings, of poets, politicians and churchmen. And the High Altar still contains the body of Edward the Confessor, the Abbey’s founder.
The Towers of the Houses of Parliament stand high above the city. On the highest tower there is the largest clock in the country which is known to the whole world as Big Ben. One can hear Big Ben strike every quarter of an hour. The clock «Big Ben» came into service in 1859. Big Ben is the biggest clock bell in Britain. The official London residence of the Queen is Buckingham Palace. It was built in the 18 th century.
One of the most famous museums in the world is the British Museum. It is situated in London. Built in the middle of the last century it is situated in Bloomsbury, a district in central London. It is an immense, light grey building, like a Greek Temple. The British Museum is a great library and a wonderful art gallery.
The Houses of Parliament. It was once a royal palace. Now it's the seat of Government. In 1834 it was destroyed by fire. The new building was built in 1852. It contains 500 apartments. Among them are the Central Hall, the House of Lords, and the House of Commons. When the House is in session a Union Jack flies over the Tower by day, and a light burns in the clock Tower, or Big Ben by night. The people of London can hear the sound of the bell every hour .
