TREASURE ISLAND
BY ROBERT LOUIS STEVENSON
THE BLACK SPOT
Narrator 1 – Jim brought some cool drinks and medicines to the Captain. He seemed both weak and excited.
Captain – Jim! You’ll bring me some rum now, won’t you?
Jim – The doctor…..
Captain - All doctors are fools. I’ll give you a gold coin for a glass of rum.
N 2 – Jim fetched the rum. The Captain drank it down quickly.
Captain – Jimmy! Have you seen that seaman today?
Jim – Black Dog?
Captain – Yes! Black Dog. They’ll give me the black spot. It’s my old sea-chest they want.
Jim – But what is the black spot?
Captain – It’s a sign, Jim. Keep your eyes open!
N 1 – Next morning the Captain went downstairs. He didn’t eat much but had more rum.
N 2 – At about 3 o’clock Jim was standing at the door when he saw someone walking slowly along the road. He was blind and tapped before him with a stick. He stopped a little from the inn and said:
Beggar – Will any kind friend tell a poor blind man where he is now?
Jim – You are at the Admiral Benbow Inn, my good man.
Beggar – I hear a voice! Will you give your hand?
N 1 – But when Jim gave him his hand, the man gripped it like a vice!
Beggar – Now, boy, take me to the Captain!
Jim – Sir, I’m afraid, I can’t…..!
Beggar – Take me straight in, or I’ll break your arm!!! Lead me straight to him and shout: “Here’ s a friend for you, Bill!”
N 2 – And with that he gave Jim such a pull that he nearly fainted! Jim was so frightened that he did everything he had been ordered.
N 1 – When they entered the room, the poor Captain looked up and all the rum went out of him.
Beggar – Now, Bill, hold out your left hand!
N 2 – Jim saw him pass something from his hand into the captain’s palm.
Beggar – Now, that’s done!
N 1 – The beggar went out and Jim heard his stick tap-tap-tapping along the road. The captain opened his palm and looked into it.
Captain – Ten o’clock! Six hours!
N 2 – He jumped to his feet, made a strange sound and fell face down on the floor. The Captain was dead.
2.THE SEA-CHEST
N 1 – Jim and his mother realized what a difficult and dangerous position they were in. They decided to ask for help in the nearest village. But nobody agreed to return with them to the Admiral Benbow Inn. The name of Captain Flint carried great terror.
Mother – If none of you dare, Jim and I dare!! We’ll go back and open the sea-chest even if we have to die for it!
Jim – I’ll go with my mum!
N 2 – When Jim and Mum came back, the Captain lay as they had left him. Close to his hand was the black spot.
Jim – He had till ten, mother. Now it is only six o’clock.
Mother – Jimmy, look for the key.
Jim – I can’t find it!
Mother – Perhaps it’s round his neck.
Jim – Oh, yes, it is on the string.
N 1 – Jim and his mother hurried upstairs to the little room with the sea-chest.
Mother – Give me the key. I’ll show them that I’m an honest woman! I’ll have MY money and not a coin more!
N 2 – Suddenly Jim heard the blind beggar tapping. He knocked loudly on the inn door and pulled the handle. Soon the man was going away.
N 1 – Jim was sure that the blind beggar, Black Dog, would come back with pirates.
Jim – Mother, take it all and let’s go!
Mother – I’ll take what I have.
Jim – And I’ll take the captain’s papers.
N 2 – Jim and his mother ran along the road to the village. Soon they heard the sound of several footsteps running behind them.
Mother – My dear, … take the money and run on… . I’m going to faint…..
N 1 - And with these words she fell on Jim’s shoulder.
