Thanksgiving Day

In 1620, some British Pilgrims sailed from England to America. They sailed to America across the Atlantic ocean in the ship called « Mayflower». They arrived to America. The first winter was very hard.

In spring, the Pilgrims met a native American called Squanto. He and his tribe helped them to plant corn, to fish and to hunt.

In the autumm of 1621, they organised a thanksgiving feast and invited their friends, the Wampanoag tribe. That feast lasted 3 days.

Nowadays, every year on the 4th Thursday in November Americans celebrate Thanksgiving. Pupils don’t go to school. In New York there is a big parade.

On Thanksgiving Day, family and friends enjoy meal together. A traditional Thanksgiving dinner consists of roast tyrkey, corn, mashed potatoes, green beans and cranberry sause. Traditional Thansgiving desserts are the pumpkin and apple pies. It is a tradition to watch a football match in the afternoon.
