"The Magic Tree"
The sun shone on the tree which stood in the middle of the garden, the wind blew through its branches and the leaves whispered "Wish - wish - wish". It was a magic tree. And if somebody stood under it and wishes anything, he had his wish at once. In the house near this garden there lived a fat old man. His name was William Smith.
He was cruel and did not like girls and boys. So, one day he stood under the tree and wished all the girls and boys were on the moon. As soon as he said it, all the girls and boys were on the moon. The birds stopped singing. A little bird was sitting in the tree. And she said very quickly: "I wish Mr. Smith were good". And Mr. Smith who was going to say: "I wish all the children were on the moon", suddenly said: "I wish all the children to come to tea this afternoon, and we'll have cakes and sweets for tea".
As soon as he said this, all the birds began to sing again. The sun shone, the wind blew through the branches of the tree, and the leaves whispered "Wish - wish - wish".

Tea
Tea is the British national drink. 56 million people drink it all over Britain every day. Almost half of the country drinks tea.
Many years ago people didn't know about tea in European countries. Many people didn't even know the word "tea". Drinking tea was very popular in the East. To Britain tea came from India in the XVIIth century. At that time it was very expensive.
The word "tea" covers many social traditions. English people like a good cup of tea. They usually have four cups a day. "Teatime" is the afternoon meal of sandwiches, cake and tea to keep away hunger between lunch and dinner. In Britain hot tea is "taken" every day at 4 o'clock in the afternoon. Working people have tea at about 11 o'clock in the morning for a snack and call it "tea - break" or "elevenses". The British drink mostly Indian tea.

Reginald didn't want to be a milkman's horse. He wanted to be a racehorse and win the Derby. And Blackie with his short legs wanted to run faster like a hound.
One day Blackie had an idea.
"Why do we not eat coal?" he said. "Trains eat coal and they run fast."
They thought about it for a long time, and Reginald said: "Let's try."So they went down to the coal cellar to take some coal. But the woman come in, "What! You are stealing my coal!" she cried. She picked up a piece of coal and threw it at them. They ran away as they had never run so fast before.
One man was looking out of the window. "Oh, that horse can run fast. I'm sure it can win the Derby. And look at the dog; it's a real hound. I'll give them each medal."

American Cars

Let's take a ride in one of our cars. Do you like music? Some of our cars have stereo radios with cassette and CD players in them. Some big cars even have televisions and video machines! Many people have telephones in their cars too! Have you ever called home from your car?
In our cars we have windows that roll up and down by touching a button. And you can lock and unlock the doors by pushing a different button.
Almost every car has a heater and air conditioner to keep us warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
We love our cars and we spend a lot of time in them. Some cars will tell you outside temperature and what direction you are travelling (north, south, east or west). I've even seen cars that talk to you! Can you imagine a car telling you to put your seatbelt on? Most Americans always wear a seatbelt.

The lost ruby
There was once a king who was always sad. He never laughed or smiled. Nothing could please him. He always looked on the dark side of life.
The king had a large house with a wonderful garden. An old man looked after the garden. He was always singing as he worked.
One day the king was walking in his garden when he heard the old man's song. He called him over.
"Tell me, old man," said the king, "why are you always so cheerful?"
The old man said, "Sadness can never enter my heart. I have locked it out."
"Don't be stupid!" said the king crossly. "Your heart is not a house! No one can escape sadness."
The old man just smiled and went back to his roses.
The king was angry with the old man. He decided to prove that he was right, and the old gardener was wrong.
The next day the king went down into the garden again. He took a large ruby from his pocket and gave it to the old gardener. "I want you to look after this for me," he said. "But if you lose this ruby, you will lose your life."
The old man took the ruby and hid it under his bed. That night the king dresses as a beggar, went to the gardener's house and stole the ruby. He took it and threw it into the river.
The next day the king went down into the garden again. He called the old man over and said, "I want you to bring that ruby to the palace in two days time. And remember, if you lose it... "
When the king got home that night, he looked under his bed. When he saw that the ruby wasn't there he knew he had only two days to live.

"Great Britain and the Britishn
Dear boys and girls, welcome to out Club of merry and Quick/witted. Today we'll speak about Great Britain. We hope you'll learn a lot of new things. We'll try to make the competition merry and interesting. You must know the rules. They are very easy. You may sing with out participants, you may help them with your answers; you may support your team by clapping. Let's invite the teams ... Let's introduce to our judges.
It's high time to begin our competition.
I. The first task is to name your team and to tell your motto.
II. The second part of the competition is as follows: the teams have prepared the set of pictures. They will show the pictures one by one to another team. They will have 30 seconds to think and to make up a sentence. There must be a story as a result.
III. Each team had their hometask. They were to advertise one of the parts of the United Kingdom. We like to go to Great Britain, but we don't know where to go. Teams, help us, please.
IV. It's high time to have a rest. Let's listen to the songs. (Each team sings the song.)
V. Dear judges, tell us some words about the score.
VI. The Captains' competition.
