«Spring Holidays»

Objectives:

1. To introduce and practise words about Spring holidays.

2. To practise speaking about seasons and weather.

Equipment:computer, presentation, photos, cards, handouts.

Procedure

1. Greeting.

Pupils: Good morning, good morning to you,

Good morning, good morning,

We are glad to see you!

Teacher: Good morning, pupils. Sit down. I’m glad to meet you too. Let’s begin our lesson.

Who is on duty today? Who is absent at the lesson?

1. Warm up.

Last lessons we spoke about seasons and weather. Let’s remember.

Answer the questions:

• How many seasons are there in a year?

• What are they?

• Let’s speak about them.

Look at the pictures. Say the season. Describe the pictures. What can you see on the pictures?

• What season is it now?

• What are the spring months?

• What is the weather like today?

• Is such weather usual in the spring?

• What is the usual weather in spring?

• What do you usually do when the weather is warm?

• What do you usually do when the weather is cool and rainy?

1. Poems about spring.

Pupils have prepared poems about spring for the lesson.

1. Introduction the new theme “Spring holidays”. Writing date, the theme in the copybooks. Introduction the aims of the lesson.

1. Choose holidays that we celebrate in spring.

Pupils read names of different holidays that people celebrate in our country. They choose and write down in their copybooks only those holidays that are celebrated in spring.

1. Match the holidays and their dates:

After the previous task pupils repeat the holidays that are celebrated in spring and match them with the given dates. They should make sentences as

“Women’s Day is celebrated on the 8^th of March”.

Navruz is celebrated on the 21^st of March.

Memory Day is celebrated on the 9^th of May.

Health Day is celebrated on the 7^th of April.

Cosmonautics Day is celebrated on the 12^th of April.

April Fool’s Day is celebrated on the 1^st of April.

Books Day is celebrated on the 2^nd of April.

Pupils read different activities that people do on holidays. They should say on what holiday this activity is done.

We congratulate our grannies on Women’s Day.

We watch films and programmes about space on the Cosmonautics Day.

We make jokes on April Fool’s Day.

People cook national dishes on Navruz.

Children wear new clothes on Navruz.

Children prepare postcards for veterans of War on Memory Day.

We sing national songs and dance on Navruz.

1. Group work.

Present a holiday. Pupils are divided into 5-6 groups of 3 or 4 members. They are given a picture. They should guess what holiday is presented on the picture and describe the holiday and the picture. After preparation (4-5 minutes)the pictures are presented on the screens so that everybody can see it and one representative of a group makes his description.

1. Presentation English holiday “May Day Holiday”.

After speaking about holidays celebrated in our country teacher present an English holiday for pupils. It’s May Day that is celebrated on the 1^st of May in England.

May Day

May Day is a holiday in England. On May Day young people pick flowers and put them in their homes. They sing spring songs and choose a May king and May queen. They give them crowns of spring flowers. Children dance round a maypole with coloured ribbons. The ribbons make a bright picture on the maypole.

1. Singing the English folk song “Greensleeves”.

Pupils have learnt an English folk song “Greensleeves” for the lesson. It is a very popular song in Great Britain. It was written in XVI century. Since that time it had a lot of versions. By our time it has several modern versions. Pupils sing it.

• What do you feel when you listen or sing the song?

1. Presentation Uzbek holiday “Navruz”.

Let’s speak about the most popular and the happiest holiday of our country. How do you think what is the name of this holiday? (Navruz)

Answer the questions about Navruz:

Navruz is celebrated on the21st of March.

1. What is the usual weather at Navruz?

The weather on Navruz is usually warm.

1. What do people cook at Navruz?

Usually people cook somsa, palov, (pupils’ own answers).

1. What are the special food at Navruz?

The special food on Navruz is sumalak?

1. What do people usually do at Navruz?

People usually visit friends, congratulate each other, wish everybody “Happy Navruz”, go to the parks, (pupils’ own answers).

1. Work with the text. Pupils have cards with the text about Navruz. There are also some words on the cards. They should fill the blanks using these words. After doing the task they should read the text and check together.
