Welcome & Objectives

Greet students and read through the lesson objectives:

  • Learn new words for discussing natural disasters, their causes and their consequences.

  • Read the text and do multiple-choice and fill-in-the gap tasks.

***Show students Slide 3 first and ask them to guess what new topic they are going to discuss.

New Topic –Causes and consequences of natural disasters

Pre-learning

  • (P) Show Slide 3 with a set of photos. Students should think about and discuss with the person next to them what these photos have in common (what they depict). This discussion should lead to students identifying these photos as examples of natural disasters.

  • (G) Students will be asked to discuss in groups and then formulate a definition for natural disasters.

  • Pass out the handout with synonyms, and ask student to glue it into their notebook. As a class, discuss the synonyms.


Disaster Vocabulary:

  • Show slide 6 and elicit students’ knowledge about what disasters of the natural world they know.

  • Show Slide 7 with the list of topic related words and ask to read aloud the words students already know.

  • Pass out the Natural Disasters Words handout. Tell students there are new words, definitions and examples with these words given.

  • Give students 1-2 minutes to read through the words.

  • Show Slides 9’s picture, click for the definition. Students should guess what word the picture represents. Click again and again for the word and the word in a sentence. Read the sentence and any notes aloud. Do the same with Slides 10-29.

***The slides are in the same order as given in the list. Teacher can confuse the order.



Reading: The End of Life on Earth

  • Pass out The End of Life on Earth handout to each student.

  • Explain to the students they will start reading the text in class, and do Task 1& Task 2 as a home task.

  • First, ask students to do the reparation exercise: put the disasters in the correct groups. They can do the exercise in pairs or in groups of 3.

  • Click on Slide 31 again to show the answers for students to self-check.
