The heart can fit in the palm of our hand,
But the whole world does not fit in our heart,
Other countries are very good,
But Dagestan is the dearest for the soul.

The year 2016 has been declared the Year of Mountains in Dagestan for the sustainable development of mountain areas in the Republic, keeping up and developing traditions and customs of original centuries-old cultural lifestyle of mountaineers.
Dagestan is situated at the junction of two continents. Dagestan means “Land of mountains”. Its name speaks for itself, most of the republic is mountainous. You can feel a wonderful long-forgotten excitement of soul in mountainous Dagestan. When you rise from the ground the morning mist penetrates into lungs, the body becomes weightless and legs bring you to the top of the mountain. When the top becomes closer, the stronger is the wish to sing, cry and fly. Such fairy condition can be only while watching an endless panorama of Dagestan mountains. Moreover, everything that was important for you on the ground becomes nothing on the top. The most beautiful and reasonable thoughts are fold when a person is alone with nature. Having breathe the clear air you go down with a sense of complete freedom from madding crowd and start to perceive differently all things which happen around.
Where is this Dagestan of yours?' mountaineers were asked, wise and witty people who live high up in the mountains. The mountaineers answered: “Above and below an eagle's wing and it has three treasures”

The first treasure of Dagestan is its Land.
The stony land of the mountain folk is their most priceless asset. It gives them a hard life. To be able to grow anything on these stones, the mountaineer has had to carry earth to them all his life in baskets, in "khurdzhuni", in “papakhas” and even by the handful.
Wherever I go, I carry with me a handful of my native soil as all mountaineers have done since time immemorial. This is my land.

The second treasure of Dagestan is the Water.
Dagestan is girt by four silver belts, the four Koisu rivers. They are met like brothers by the Sulak and the Samur. And then the gay, swift rivers of Dagestan rush on to the silvery waters of the Caspian Sea.
The sea! My own native Caspian! In your turbulence I see the young dare-devils from the mountain country, in your calm, the dignity of its wise old men. The whole of Dagestan looks at you as if into a clear mirror.

There is a third treasure. It is immense. In this country of mountains, there are other mountains and other seas, which also are priceless.
In Dagestan there are auls which are like independent states - they live solely by inspiration. They are: Kubachi - the aul of goldsmiths, Gotsatl of silversmiths, Untsukul of wood-carvers, Balkhar of potters, Tsovkra of tight - rope walkers. There are auls of dancers and auls of singers. The arts and crafts of these communities are so original that the other auls, whose children don't like to be second to anybody in skill, strength our courage, have tacitly decided not to compete with them.
Imitation is not fashionable in the mountains. The people prefer to carry on traditions rather than imitate. This is what I call the third component part of Dagestan, its third treasure.

The village of Rahata is famous for making burkas – woolen overcoats of traditional design. They are essential part of Dagestan clothing. Burkas are completely handmade. Its history stretches back more than 5 hundred years. They are also made entirely from wool. To make one craftsmen first calm the wool to soften and clear it. Then they use special device that looks like a bow to fluffy up the wool. Then they put a fluffy wool on canvas and wet it with water. They roll up the canvas, put it on the table and roll the canvas back and forth at the time. They take the thicken wool and cut off the edges with scissors to give it proper shape. Then it wetted again and rolled. The wool is treated with a comb to take extra materials. In Rahata burka production is considered as women’s wok.

Dagestan is famous for carpet weaving. Different wonderful carpets are made here. Carpets are used to be woolen. The most important for carpet is its density. The thicker the ties the better is the carpet. A perfect carpet must have 250 ties per square centimeters. The legend says if girls were born in families mothers taught them the craft of carpet making. Girls usually made ones before they got married and if it was beautiful the girl would be considered more attractive. The girls usually sang songs while weaving because time flew with music.

Kubachi is famous for its gold and silver jewellery. People of this village made silver and gold sables, bracelets, vases earrings. The village is situated high in the mountains. . During the middle ages the village was widely known in Dagestan and abroad as an important metalworking center, where coats-of-mail, swords, daggers and the like were produced. The fame of Kubachi has been created by the skilful hands of its residents, who are masters of the amazing secrets of metal chasing. The craftsmanship of the local goldsmiths has been passed from one generation to another. And that’s why any boy or girl, who has not yet learned to read or write, can handle the chisel and work elementary designs on a copper or brass plate.

Dagestan is famous for its variety of ethnic groups who cherish their traditions, customs and adats: love for the homeland and its people, respect for the history, culture and national dignity of other nations, fidelity to friendship and promise, respect for the elders, hospitality and many others. It may not be out of place to note, that today these and other old customs and traditions have survived mainly in villages. Most of the city dwellers, especially the youth, find it difficult to observe some of them and often ignore them as old-fashioned.
As they say in the mountains, “People not respecting old age, traditions and customs, doesn’t have their future”
