History  Harvard is the oldest University in the United States, was founded on September 8, 1636. Named after the John Harvard. By the way, John Harvard was not the founder of the University. He was only a contributor who donated his library and half of his fortune. By the end of the 19 century, the College was recognized as a Central Сultural Institution among Boston's elite. After the American civil war, Harvard President Charles Elliott, after 40 years in office (1869-1909), transformed the College and its affiliated schools of professional education into a centralized research University. Harvard became a founding member of the Association of American Universities in 1900. In the early years, Harvard had only one teacher and nine students. They studied Bible texts, Latin, and mathematics.
