horror is a genre of modern art that is designed to frighten, shock or disgust its readers or viewers, causing them feelings of horror and shock .

The first Russian horror film is considered to be "Viy" (1909), a silent short feature film by Vasily Goncharov. The film has not survived to this day. Such silent mystical films as "At Midnight in the Cemetery" (1910), "The Wanderer Beyond the Grave" (1915), "The Vampire Woman" (1915) and "Viy" (1916) are also considered among the first films of the genre in Russia. All these films have also not survived to the present day. Some researchers refer to horror films and the picture "Portrait" (1915), directed by Vladislav Starevich based on the work of Gogol.

In the USSR, such a genre as "horror films" was almost completely absent for a long time .
