Things to do in Cairngorms A visit to the Cairngorm Mountain Centre is an essential part of any trip, regardless of the season. The winter months attract skiers and snowboarders with high-quality ski runs – seven green, six blue, and eight red – and an extensive snowboard park. When the snow has melted, a number of guided walks are offered to explore the beautiful landscape around the Centre. These range from the 4-5 hour Northern Corries walk to the less extensive 90-minute Walk to the Top. - There are a lot of interesting places in Cairngorm for other people: museums (Highland Folk Museum, Clan Macpherson Museum, Atholl Country Life Museum), palaces and castles (Balmoral, Corgarff, Kildrummy, Blair ), art galleries and shops (Loch an Eilein, Indoor Discovery, Speyside)… .

Forests - The forests of the Cairngorms are the biggest and best connected forests in Britain, a quarter of the entire Scottish native woodland resource, more than half of the surviving Caledonian forest, and a refuge for disappearing wildlife. Ancient pinewoods are one of Scotland’s national treasures. There simply isn’t anywhere else quite like them with tussocks of blueberry and heather and the sweet sticky smell of resin. In the Cairngorms it’s really easy to get into them and because they are so vast it’s not difficult to find somewhere quiet for a moment of pure solitude and make a genuine connection with an ancient and wild place.

Mountains A little piece of the arctic dragged 800 miles south. There’s nowhere else in the UK like the Cairngorm plateau. High up on Britain’s most massive mountain range the high tundra is more like arctic Canada and Scandinavia than Britain, with the weather and wildlife to match. Above 600m, vegetation becomes sparse and stunted. For every 50m in height, the temperature drops 1 degree Celsius. Wind speed increases to over 100 miles per hour. Snow can lie for 8 months of the year. Venturing onto the plateau, especially in winter, is a serious undertaking. But you’re rewarded with wildlife and views that very few people get to see – and even on the busiest days, you can often have it all to yourself.

- Cairngorms is a home to some of Britain's most loved, but endangered species The National Park is a refuge for our native red squirrels. In fact they are doing so well here that there are enough to export some to other parts of Scotland. Whilst you’re walking through the forests listen out for the skittering of claws on tree bark, and perhaps even the thud of a chewed pine cone hitting the floor. - Look up amongst the branches and you might see a soft, bushy red tail arc along a branch and spring through the air. More skittering claws, perhaps a bit of chitter-chatter to let you know you’ve been spotted. And if you’re lucky you can follow one of nature’s finest acrobats as it dances amongst the tree tops.

- The Cairngorms National park is one of the areas where the new Scottish wildcat action plan is being implemented. The aim is to conserve Scottish wildcats by reducing the chances of cross breeding with domestic and feral cats and by lowering the risk to wildcats from feline diseases. The Scottish wildcat is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and evocative mammals of the Cairngorms National Park and yet is on the brink of extinction. The Cairngorms Wildcat Project in 2013 won the RSPB Nature of Scotland Innovation Award. This helped to raise awareness of the plight of the Scottish wildcat throughout the Cairngorms and work with local people to reduce key threats. The success of this project is now being used as the template for the national action plan to save the species, delivered by Scottish Wildcat Action.

The golden eagle is a truly magnificent bird. Although it’s not quite Britain’s largest bird of prey, the white tailed or ‘sea’ eagle takes that prize, nor is it the rarest, but it is certainly the most iconic. The wingspan can be more than 2 metres (6’6”) and a bird can weigh up to 5 kg. There are no particular ‘hotspots’ for seeing eagles and their eyries are a closely guarded secret, but if you spend time in the uplands and keep looking up you may be lucky enough to see this great bird soaring around ridgelines, catching the thermals and looking for prey.

Capercaille - 80% of the UK’s capercaillie live here in the National Park. A male capercaillie is one of nature’s most magnificent sights and unfortunately one that is perilously close to becoming a memory. The turkey-sized capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is one of Scotland’s most characteristic birds. The males perform an extraordinary courtship display called a lek. While fanning their tails and holding their wings down the males strut about at their traditional lek site and produce amazing gurgling, wheezing and popping noises.

The twinflower is one of Scotland’s most iconic wildflowers, an emblem of Scotland’s ancient Caledonian forests. However, it is a plant under serious threat and innovative work has been undertaken to ensure that the Cairngorms National Park is a stronghold for the remaining population. COME TO THE PARK!
