Know Before You Go

Novodevichy Convent is open to visitors from 10am – 5:20pm

Wednesday – Sunday. The ticket office closes 1 hour before

closing. Note that it is closed Tuesdays and for maintenance

on the first Monday of each month.

Tickets are 150 rubles (approximately $5 US) and 130 rubles for a ticket to photograph.
The closest metro station is Sportivnaya (Спортивная)

Moscow Deviche( Virgin's) field

There are two versions:

the name comes from the location on the Virgin's Field
the name comes from the name of its first abbess Helena Devochkina . Almost immediately, the monastery became a refuge for widows and royal princesses .

Nominations of Cultural Properties to the World Heritage List (Ensemble of Novodevichy Convent)

The World Heritage Committee,

1. Inscribes the Ensemble of the Novodevichy Convent, Russian Federation, on the World Heritage List on the basis of cultural criteria (i), (iv) and (vi):

Criterion (i): The Novodevichy Convent is the most outstanding example of the so-called ‘Moscow Baroque’, which became a fashionable style in the region of Moscow. Apart from its fine architecture and decorative details, the site is characterised by its town-planning values.

Criterion (iv): The Novodevichy Convent is an outstanding example of an exceptionally well-preserved monastic complex, representing particularly the ‘Moscow Baroque’ style in the architecture of the late 17th century.

Criterion (vi): The Novodevichy Convent ensemble integrates the political and cultural nature of the existing World Heritage property of the Moscow Kremlin. It is itself closely related to Russian Orthodoxy, as well as with the Russian history especially in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Novodevichy Convent was founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasili III in honour of the of the Smolensk icon of Our Lady, Virgin Hodegetria.

The Monastery is a real fortress. Its main buildings were erected in the second half of the 17th century representing Moscow Baroque style. In 1926 it became a history and art museum.

Here you can see a collection of art objects – icons, old paintings, fabrics, valuable manuscripts etc. In 1898 the Novodevichy Cemetery was opened without monastery walls. In 2004 it was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
