«Barsova Gora»

The naturally limited territD Of Barsova Gora is situated 8- 15 km westward of the largest city of Ugra - Surgut. This picturesque location has long attracted great attention from scientists and tourists. It extends

beyond the right bank of the Ob River, stretching on an additional 8.5 km. Researchers discovered humans first

arrived in this area nearly 7 thousand years ago. These ancient people were drawn to Barsova Gora because of its advantageous geographical position and abundance of natural resources. This place is distinguished by its great variety of trees and other plant life. Pine, birch, asp, mountain ash grow here in addition to larch and Siberian cedar. This region is especially known for abundance of berries, for instance: cowberries, cranberries, raspberries, bilberries, cloudberries and dog rose. Mushrooms are also frequently found here. Barsova Gora is overgrown with moss.

The administration of Surgut district has founded Barsova Gora Center. Excellent preservation and vivid conveyance of archeological .antiquities allow development of interesting tourist's tracks. During the

excavations the scientists found more than 3000 dwellings combined into

hundreds of settlements, fortresses, burial grounds, hidden treasures. The first relics date from the Neolithic epoch. Finds of Pleistocene fauna and bones of mammoths and woolly rhinoceros have been found on Barsova Gora. There is no other location in Siberia with such a concentration of antiquities and ancient remains that represent different periods of aborigines' history. The archeologists discovered splendidly decorated vessels including those shaped in the .forms. of boats, arrowheads made of flint, axes, knives

crafted from slates. Numerous dishes, firs metal items, figures of birds, animals and people represent the periods of Stone Age and Imn Age.

Barsova Gora served as a sacred place for Charities until recently. One of the last offering ceremonies here was held in 1973. According to the words of the local Khanty people, still there is a sacred larch tree on the outskirts of Barsovo settlement.

An importance of this complex is supported by more than 500 scientific articles. Finds from Barsova Gora are kept in the museums of Western Europe, Tyemen, Surgut and in the Hermitage in Saint Petersburgh.
