THE HEN AND THE ROSE
There was a beautiful rose in a beautiful garden. Every morning she looked at the sun and smiled. But one morning when the sun came out he was surprised to see that his friend, the rose, looked sad. He wanted to know what was the matter.
‘Dear Rose,” said the sun, ‘why do you look so sad?’
‘Oh dear!’ answered the rose. “I am so unhappy because an ugly worm is eating my leaves and does not go away.’
The sun felt very sorry for the rose. ‘I will not shine,’ he said, ‘until Rose id happy.’ So he hid behind a cloud.
The wind came along. ‘Father Sun,’ he cried, ‘why are you not shining today?’
‘Rose is so unhappy,’ answered the sun. ‘An ugly worm is eating her leaves and it will not go away. I will not shine until Rose is happy.’
‘I, too, am sorry for for the Rose,’ said the wind. ‘I won’t blow until Rose is happy.’
And the wind stopped blowing.
A bird was surprised when the wind stopped blowing.
Mr Wind,’ he called, ‘why have you stopped blowing?’
‘Rose id so unhappy. An ugly worm is eating her leaves and he will not go away. So Father Sun will not shine and I will not blow until Rose is happy.’
‘I also love Rose,’ sang the bird. ‘I will not sing again until Rose is happy.’
The bird met a hen.
‘Why do you look so sad? Why aren’t you singing?’ said the hen.
‘Rose is so unhappy. An ugly worm is eating her leaves and it will not go away. So Father Sun will not shine, Mr Wind will not blow and I will not sing again until Rose is happy.’
‘Really!’ cried the hen. ‘Please tell me how this will help Rose? If you want to help Rose you must do something for her. Come with me.’
The hen and the bird went to see the rose. The old hen asked no questions. She did not even take the time to say good morning. She looked at the leaves of the rose with her little eyes. She found the worm and ate it.
‘There,’ she said. ‘See how I have helped Rose and at the same time had a wonderful breakfast.’

THE OWL
Long, long ago the Owl was a painter. He was a very good worker – not lazy, quick and nice to those for whom he worked. All the birds went to the Owl and asked him to pain their feathers. He painted them in different colours just as the birds wanted it. They were all greatle pleased with the Owl, all but the Raven. The Raven did not like the colours or the way the Owl painted the birds’ feathers.
All the birds changed the colour of their feathers from time to time, only the Raven did not change his colour. His feathers were snow-white and he liked the colour very much. He often showed his wings to all the birds and said, ‘My white feathers are wonderful, aren’t they?’
But time passed and soon the Raven began to like other colours and was not happy about the white feathers any more. One day he went to see the Owl and said, ‘ Very well, you may paint my feathers, too, but, they must have a colour that no other bird has.’
The Owl thought and thought what colour to paint the Raven’s feathers, he showed the Raven one colour after another , but the Raven did not like them. In the end he painted them black and said, ‘Now you have a colour that no other bird has.’
The Raven looked at hinself in the mirror and saw that his feathers were as black as night.
He did not like the colour . But it was too late to change the colour now.
And from that day on all ravens wear black clothes. But they do not make friends with the Owl. And the Owl understands that if he meets the ravens face to face it can be the end of him. That is why the Owl does not fly by day. He flies only at night when all ravens sleep.

Which Is Better ?
Many years ago an elephant and a monkey had a quarrel. The elephant was delighted that he was so strong. ‘Look! How big and strong I am,’ he said. ‘I can pull a tree down. Can you?’
Now the monkey was delighted that he was so quick. ‘Look! How quickly I can run and climb,’ he said. ‘Can you climb a tree?’
At last they decided to go and speak to the Old Bird. ‘We cannot agree,’ they told the Bird, ‘tell us what you think about it. Which is better – to be strong or to be quick?’
The Old Bird said to them, ‘Do as I tell you and then I’ll learn which is better. Do you see that great tree across the river? Go and get the fruit from it and bring it to me.’
So they went to the river, but the monkey was afraid of the watre. ‘Get on my back,’ said the elephant politely. ‘I’ll carry you. I am big and strong and I am not afraid to swim across the river.’ There on the bank stood the tree. It was so high that the fruit was far above them. The elephant tried to pull the tree down, but it was too strong. ‘Wait a minute,’ said the monkey politely. ‘I can climb. He ran quickly up the tree and threw the fruit to the ground. The elephant put it in his great mouth. Then they crossed the river again and gave the fruit to the Old Bird.
‘Now,’ they said, ‘which is better – to be strong or to be quick?’
‘Can anybody tell which is better?’ asked the Old Bird. ‘The elephant could not get the fruit alone. The monkey could not get the fruit alone. But you could get it together: one of you crossed the river, the other climbed the tree.’

Listen to the story An American Girl in a French School, then say how Kate felt in her new school when she began to study there and when she had to leave it.
An American Girl in a French School
Kate was twelve when she went to France for a year with her family. She knew only three words in French, not much to have a talk with someone. When she first appeared in her classroom the teacher told the class she was American. All the pupils turned and looked at her with interest. During the break everyone crowded around asking how to say things in English, and she also learnt how to pronounce some French words for clothes, food and games. It was very easy to learn. But the everyday language and rules were harder.
At first Kate sat day after day and did not understand a thing what the teacher said. At her old school she used to think that it was fun to sit at school and not have to listen all work. It was very very hard. She couldn’t even understand simple things like names. It took her weeks to remember them.
The work at school was hard and there was a lot of homework. Every day there were lessons and exercises and French grammar. All the written work had to be very very neat.
With the classwork in other subjects Kate took special lessons from a teacher who knew English and French. That helped a lot. As time passed Kate learnt to understand most of what people said. She could talk a lot though she made mistakes. She could play with other children. She could not read well but she tried her best and by the end of the year she could do all the special activities along with everyone else. They had two class plays of the school theatre and sang songs in French, of course.
Kate was very sorry to leave France. She understood it was hard to be a foreigner but she liked her French school and she had some very good friends there.

He Didn’t Like Saying ‘No’
Jim and Tim were good friends. But they were different. Jim was hard-working, smart and modest. He was a loyal friend too. But Tim was very lazy and slow, though he was devoted to Jim and kind. The contrast between the young men was so striking that people couldn’t understand how Jim and Tim could be friends.
Once the two friends were camping together. They found a picturesque place at the foot of a large rock and put up a tent there. In the evening Jim said to Tim, ‘Here’s some money. Go to the village and buy some meat.’
“I’m so tired,’ answered Tim. ‘You go.’ Jim didn’t say a word but went to the village and bought some meat and bread. When he came back, he said to Tim, ‘Here’s the meat. Could you please cook it?’ But Tim answered that he wasn’t good at cooking. Jim had nothing to do but cook the meat himself. Cooking the meat kept Jim so busy that he asked his friend to cut the bread. ‘I don’t want to,’ answered Tim, so Jim cut the bread.
Then he said to Tim, ‘I’d like you to go and get some water, please.’
‘No, I don’t want to get my clothes dirty,’ Tim answered, so Jim got the water. Finally Jim said, ‘The meat is ready. Come and eat it.’
