3. Reading:

Read the following paragraphs and reorder them to get a coherent (связный) text.

Howerever, the arguments got worse and worse, and the more they tried to keep me in the house, the more pig-headed (несговорчивый) I got and the more I sneaked out (улизнуть).

It was then that I decided to break the rules they had set down. So instead of coming home at 10 p.m, I would arrive at 11 p.m and then refuse to tell them where I had been. I somehow felt that if I broke their rules, they would realise that I was old enough to look after myself, and leave me alone.

Finally, one Saturday night I didn’t come until 2 a.m. My father wanted to know why I was so late. I refused to tell him. We had a huge argument which ended with me getting a taxi to my sister’s house.

What went wrong?

Yours Jane

Dear Editor,

Once, I asked if I could go to a party on Saturday night which finished at 11.30 p.m. Conservative as they were, my parents agreed, but on the condition that my dad came to pick me up at 10 p.m. I argued and argued about it but in the end, I had to agree. I knew I was going to be really embarrassed when my father came to pick me up, so I spent the whole party worrying. I didn’t speak to my parents for three days after that. My mother tried to explain how they both felt, but I didn’t want to listen.

  1. What is Jane’s problem?

  2. What do her parents think?

  3. Do you agree with her or with her parents? Why?

  4. If you were Jane what would you do to solve

your problem?

WORD FORMATION

COMMON SUFFIXES

In English many words are formed with suffixes (rows of letters that are added to the end of a word). Suffixes change the kind of word, so knowing them is very useful; you learn one new word and with the help of suffixes you can use it in many contexts. Here are the most common examples:

  • nouns for things: -ment -ity -ness -tion -ence/-ance

  • nouns for people: -er -or -ist -ee

  • verbs: (usually it’s simply the shortest word form) –ify -ise -en en-

  • adjectives: -ous -able/-ible -al -ed/-ing -ful/-less -ic -ive

  • adverbs: -ly

  1. Find examples for as many of these suffixes as possible.

  1. Form the words. Complete as much of this table as is possible for you.
