Land

Britain is protecting the environment on land in many ways for example by encouraging wildlife conservation and good forestry. It supports international agreements to protect wildlife and their habitats.

• Hazardous wastes can also cause problems, since many developing counties do not cope properly with these waste.

The world’s tropical forests are gradually destroyed at a rapid rate. Deforestation can have a serious effect on the local and global environment.

It destroys habitats for forests species of plants and animals; and allows the topsoil to be eroded.

Timber is an important source of export earning for many developing countries, but it is important that their forests are managed in a sustainable way. Britain is therefore increasing the amount of support it gives to tropical forestry.

Causes of land pollution

Improper disposal of sewage

• Countries have difficulty finding suitable places to dispose of the waste.

Where there is insufficient control over the proper disposal of waste, rubbish are either left in public places or illegal dumping grounds.

Causes of land pollution

Excessive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides

• Chemical fertilizers and pesticides pollute the soil.
• Pests usually develop resistance to pesticides over time causing farmers to increase the amount of pesticides used. As a result, the problem of soil contamination is worsened.

This has killed a large number of animals and plants and they have disappeared forever!

We've got to STOP now, before it's too LATE! We mustn't forget that planet Earth is our home! We must PROTECT it!
