Lesson Structure

1. Warm-up (5 minutes)

• Discuss summer camp experience with the class: "Have you ever been to summer camp?" "What did you do there?"

• Elicit past tense responses and write examples on the board (e.g., "I went to summer camp.", "I swam in the river.")

2. Introduction to Past Simple (5 minutes)

• Briefly explain the formation of Past Simple tense (regular and irregular verbs).

• Show example sentences from the summer camp text:

  • "The children got up early."

  • "They swam in the river."

• Highlight signals of past time (last summer, yesterday, ago).

3. Reading Activity (15 minutes)

Before reading activities

Summer camp is а perfect way for children of every age to learn, stay active, and have fun. Have you ever been to а camp? Did you go to the summer camp last summer? Are you going to the camp this summer?

While reading activities

1. Fill in the gaps with the prepositions ON, WITH, IN, NEAR, ТО, ВУ, АТ.

2. Read about а summer camp, find these expressions in the text and check your variants.

Next summer Boris and Lena will go to а summer camp. They will live in tents or in houses near а forest and а small river. The children will get up early in the morning, do their morning exercises in the playground and wash themselves in the river. The children will have their duties in the camp. Some kids will help to prepare breakfast, dinner and supper. Others will bring water, milk or vegetables from the collective farm. The boys and girls will make their beds and clean their tents.

Not far from the camp, there is a farm. There is a good garden there with fruit-trees and the children will help to pick fruit in the garden. In the morning and in the afternoon the children will go to the river to swim. Some boys and girls can swim very well. The others will learn to swim. The children will go for many walks in the forest. In the evening sometimes they will make a camp-fire. The children will dance, play games and sing songs by the camp-fire. It will be very interesting at the camp.

4. Pair Work - Dialogue Practice (17 minutes)

• Using the dialogue prompt from the file, students interview each other about what they did at a summer camp or a vacation last summer using Past Simple.

• Example questions: "What did you do at summer camp?", "Did you swim in the river?"

5. Wrap-up and Homework (3 minutes)

• Recap the rule of Past Simple tense.

• Ask students to write 8 sentences about their last summer vacation using Past Simple tense.
