We live in Kurgan region. Our region is rich in natural beauty. These
are beautiful forests, endless fields, deep rivers. But the main wealth of
our region is its beautiful lakes. We have more than 7 thousand of
them! There are so many lakes that even not all of them have names.
There are lakes whose names are known to everybody in the region.
But not everyone knows where these names came from. And the origin
of the name of every lake is an exciting story.
Lake Medvezhye (Petukhovskiy district)
There are several legends about the name of this lake. One of them tells
the story of an old, lame and wounded bear. He was very unhappy and
decided to commit suicide. One day he came out of the dense forest to
the lakeside and entered the water. He plunged headlong into the lake,
but the salty water pushed him to the surface. For three days the bear
tried to sink to the bottom. Finally, he gave up and went ashore. And a
miracle happened: the bear stopped limping and felt young and healthy.
The hunter who witnessed this miraculous healing told the other
hunters about it. So the lake got its name-Medvezhye.
Lake Akulinkino (Pritobolniy district)
Long ago there lived in Utyatka the girl Akulina. She was beautiful,
kind and household. A guy from a rich family fell in love with Akulina
and married her. But her mother-in-law did not love Akulina for her
poverty. And she turned her son against his wife. Often the husband
punished the girl. A meek girl suffered everything. But one day her
patience ran out. One summer morning she came to the lake, looked for
the last time at the sun and at the green birch forest. And then she
threw herself into the lake. Since that time the water in the lake has
become very clear like tears of the poor girl. And the lake was named
Akulinkino.
Lake Krutali (Ketovskiy district)
In ancient times a lot of hunting trails ran from the Turgay steppes to
the Iletskiy Pine forest. They stretched through the grass steppes, small
forests, between the deserted and nameless lakes. By one of the lakes
hunters-Kazakhs liked to make the last halt under the mighty crown of
a lonely willow. The word “Kurtal” means – “a lonely willow”... In
1770, a farmer from the village of Shatrovo Ignatiy Neustroev migrated
to the lands of Kurganskaya Sloboda and founded the village
Kurtalnaya near the lake Kurtal. But once by mistake of the office
worker the village was written down as Krutali. And so the name of the
lake also changed to Krutali.
Lake Tatarskoe (Mokrousovskiy district)
Long ago the Tatar-Mongolian Horde moved from the East. The army
of Khan Batyi organized frequent raids on villages, drove the girls into
captivity, robbed and killed local inhabitants. And one day the men of
the village armed themselves and met the Tatar – Mongolian army at
the lake. There was a terrible battle. The Mongols were defeated. A lot
of people died fighting for the freedom of their land. They were buried
by the lake. After that the lake was named Tatarskoe.
Lake Donki (Belozerskiy district)
A long time ago on the river Don there lived a very strong man. He could bend and
straighten a horseshoe with one hand. The Russian Tsar wanted him to serve the
crown. But the man refused. Then he was caught and put in prison. But one night
he broke the door and ran to the Urals. He built a big house for his family. He had 3
daughters, very beautiful girls and needlewomen.
Once the nomads came to the place. The strongman married his first daughter the
best shepherd-Kazakh, and the second daughter became the wife of the bravest
hunter-Tatar.
But the third daughter named Donya did not want to marry anybody because she
loved her mother and father and could not leave them. Once Donya disappeared.
Her mother thought she was lost at the lake. Every morning she sailed a boat and
shouted - " Donya, Donya! Respond!"And the echo carried the words through the
reeds. - Don-Ki! Don-Ki! A lot of time the strongman and
his wife were looking for their daughter. Then they went
to their homeland. And the nomads named the lake
Donki.
Lake Nifanka (Shchuchanskiy district)
Village Nifanka was founded in 1750 by the settlers from the Kursk region.
Several people came to our region and chose a place to live on a small river in the
forest. They left a man named Nifant to guard this place, and they returned to Kursk
region to take their families. Nifant gave the small river the name Nifanochka.
After some time, 8 families from the Kursk region came to the place and founded a
village Nifanochka. To protect themselves from attacks of nomads, the families
moved to the shore of a very large lake which they also named Nifanka. In spring
the lake overflowed and surrounded the village. It seemed to be on an island.
Lake Turbanye (Dalmatovskiy district)
People call it Turban ... Even in the name of this lake you can
hear the trumpet calls of swans, the sad buzzing of cranes. But
the name Turbanye was given to the lake after the ducks, velvet
scoters, which have chosen the lake for its size. The second name
of the lake is Krugloe as it has a round shape.
Lake Monasnyrskoe (Petukhovskiy district)
According to the legend, the lake got its name from the monks who came to it. In
the shape of the lake they saw a monastery and considered it a sign of the God. In
1642 they founded a skete on the shore of the lake. Another legend says that the
lake is named so because there is a monastery at the bottom of it. The third legend
says that Lake Monastyrskoe is named so because of the monk skete stood on
mighty stilts right in the middle of the lake.
After the revolution the churchmen were oppressed all over the country. All the
monks of the skete were also killed. Their bodies were drowned in the lake. The
water in the lake from that day became reddish, and the bottom is soft like a
monastic robe.
It is impossible to tell about the placenames of all lakes situated
in our Kurgan region. But all of them are very interesting,
mysterious and exciting. They are connected with different
things: with the names of inhabitants, with the shapes of the lakes
or with different events. They give the lakes more mystery and
beauty.
